It is the biggest test of the season. Most brands offer at least four sets of irons and we wanted to test them all.
The methodology
We conducted the test at Moor Allerton GC in Leeds, where we used their state-of-the-art fitting studio complete with Trackman launch monitor. Brands were invited to send in their latest irons with the option to provide custom-fitted samples.
Key factors
– Looks
– Sound and feel
– Distance
– Forgiveness
– Quality of components
– Value for money
The Testers
Dan Murphy – Handicap: 3
“I used to be more picky about the looks but I’m increasingly concluding there’s no need to make the game any harder than it needs to be. That said, a clumsy wedge is a no-no.”
James Whitaker – Handicap: Pro
“I like something that’s forgiving so I feel confident. I want the shaft to help me and give the ball an extra kick. I like forged but not at the expense of forgiveness.”
Pete Chippindale – Handicap: 12
“Forgiveness is key – I want the bad shots not to be too bad. I don’t want to feel I have to force my irons. I’m not too bothered about appearance if it feels good.”
