5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

The Titleist GT3 fairway wood is a great option for someone who is looking to increase their ball flight control. The GT3 fairways gave me lots of ball speed without losing and control or workability.

With a new face design, the GT3 fairways enable a consistently high launch. The club also lots of adjustability so you can dial in your ball flight and shot shape.

PROS

  • Balanced ball flight control
  • Good launch trajectory
  • Increased club speed
  • Looked great at address

CONS

  • Expensive – get fitted to maximise performance

Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood Review: First Impressions

I first got my hands on the new Titleist GT3 fairway wood at Titleist’s performance centre at Woburn, where I was fitted into the new GT range. I initially tested the GT2 model, but after a few swings, I switched to the GT3 model, which I was eventually fitted into.

Similar to the GT2 model, I was impressed with the GT3’s appearance. The club looks great at address, with the seamless black gloss crown giving it that classic Titleist finish.

Having more depth to the club face suited my eye at address. Titleist also say this suits golfers with steeper swings to strike a fairway wood more consistently.

NCG Verdict

After previously hitting my own 3-wood and the GT2, I immediately liked the feel of the GT3 model more. It felt easy and smooth to swing but came out hot off the face.

I saw a huge upturn in performance from my 3-wood to the GT3. Improvements that were emphasised by the big difference in launch height that I could hit, both off the ground or off a tee. I have previously struggled to hit a highball flight with most of my metals, with a low fade being my usual shot shape. It also stopped my big slices, which was a big win.

Players from all abilities are able to use and maximise the GT3. Whether you’re looking for a more controlled ball flight or elevated performance, this model can certainly aid with both.

Titleist credits their refined SureFit Adjustable Centre of Gravity Track System for allowing a more controlled ball flight. This is a sliding weight in the sole which allows fitters to move mass inside the club. This is used to help dial in shot shape and ball flight control.

This adjustability means the club is suitable for a wide array of playing abilities. I am far from a top-level player, boasting a mid handicap, and I saw a huge upturn in performance data from the GT3. My ball flight was also noticeably more controlled than usual. I do sometimes struggle with a slice from my fairway woods, but that wasn’t a problem with the Titleist GT3.

The Trackman graph above shows just how much my ball flight trajectory had improved. This, of course, has huge on-course benefits, allowing for a softer landing when hitting greens.

As far as performance data is concerned, all my numbers were considerably higher than those of my own club. The number that I saw a noticeable increase in was my carry distance, which had increased by an average of over 12 yards.

Throughout testing, I found that the GT3 was very powerful. The ball felt like it was coming off the face a lot sharper and quicker than I was used to.

Because I had confidence in my ball flight, I was able to swing the club faster and with more conviction, hence an increase in club speed. Again, this is something that is hugely important to a golfer of my ability, in being able to gain the extra bit of distance and have confidence in my swing.

These data results are, of course, the result of having the benefit of a fitting, something I was previously slightly sceptical of. I wasn’t sure how beneficial and important it would be, but after seeing the big increase in performance results, that scepticism has drifted away.

After testing and being fitted into the GT3 at Woburn, I took it out onto my local course to see how it performed in a practical setting. I was once again impressed with its performance. I often use a 3-wood off-the-tee on some of the narrow fairways for positional play. The tee shots I hit with the GT3 were good in terms of distance and accuracy, and I felt comfortable with the club in my hand.

I have previously struggled to hit a 3-wood off the deck at times, so I usually just hit a hybrid or a long iron. But the GT3 felt very forgiving off the ground. Even when I didn’t strike it perfectly, the ball got in the air and didn’t get out of control with its flight. That was very comforting, especially for a mid-handicapper.

Final Thoughts

The GT3 fairway wood is definitely going to stay in my bag. Being able to launch the ball as high as I can off the deck is going to be a big plus for me.

I would highly recommend getting fitted, not just if you’re looking at purchasing the GT3, but for all of your clubs. It will help maximise the performance and is key to acquiring the right clubs for your game. Having the additional weight placed behind the toe of the club head was essential to helping me control my left-to-right ball flight.

The GT3’s on-course performance was very impressive, and I love the fact that I can use it for positional play and when hitting into greens on the longer holes.

Will you be purchasing a fairway wood from Titleist’s new GT range. Let us know with a with a post on X!

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
