Ping Sonya mid layer review

Looking to update your spring wardrobe? Nicola Slater has put the Ping Sonya midlayer to the test...

Ping have just realised their new spring/summer collection. The Sonya quarter zip mid layer is one of their latest women’s pieces. So how does it perform?

Ping Sonya mid layer review: NCG summary

4.5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

The Sonya midlayer is a great quarter zip midlayer. The fleece top engineered lining makes it a great option on those colder spring/summer mornings. The initial thickness shouldn’t fool you into thinking you won’t be able to swing, as this is actually very stretchy.

The plain block colour designs with small stitching detail means that the Sonya midlayer can be worn plenty of times.

PROS

  • Very stretchy
  • Fleece lined
  • Very versatile

CONS

  • Thickness might put some people off initially

Ping Sonya mid layer review: First impressions

Whilst unpackaging this mid layer, I couldn’t believe how soft it was. The outer side is smooth and the inside has a gridded fleece lining. For a mid layer it was thick yet still very stretchy. The fabric is made from a combination of 88% polyester and 12% elastane. The polyester has been created using recycled content, making this a very sustainable product.

I like the very plain design that the Sonya mid layer has. I tested the white one and as you can see in the image above it was a little see-through. The quarter zip is offered in a range of 5 different colours, all are plain with a small variety of stitching detail and colours around the zip. There is also a small ping logo on the right-hand upper sleeve.

Ping Sonya mid layer review: On course testing

I really enjoyed how this mid layer fit. I tried this in my regular top size a UK 12. Being 5ft 9 I sometimes struggle to find mid layers that are long enough for my body and arms but this ticked all of the boxes for me. It fit comfortably and there was plenty of elasticity to allow me to swing freely.

I wore this both with and without a base layer under to test how it got on. There was no restriction of movement with either.

If you’re after warmth without compromising style then this is a great option. The thick fleece material kept me nice and warm on the course. The high neck, quarter zip design also kept come of the cold air from going down my back.

Ping claims that this mid layer has some water resistance. I was out on the course in that fine rain, the stuff that gets you wet as everyone says and to start with yes the water did brush off however I certainly wouldn’t advise staying in the rain in it too long.

Ping Sonya midlayer review: The 19th hole

I think this is a very versatile item of clothing. Being a quarter zip fleece it can be worn in many different scenarios such as going on a walk or wearing as an extra layer to go to the gym. I would definitely be happy to wear this off the course.
