You think you’re wearing a golf polo shirt. Little did you know that, according to the marketing blurb at least, the piece of fabric you’re pulling over your shoulders contains enough technology to help an astronaut on a lunar mission.
SensorCool technology fabric. Performance stretch properties. Moisture movement. Crease resistant and quick dry. Recycled content. Anti-bacterial. It even shuts out ultra violet light.
This isn’t a golf shirt. It’s apparently a miracle of textile engineering – all neatly wrapped up in sizes from small to triple-extra large.
But let’s cut to the chase, and remove as much of the tech-jargon as we can. What does it feel like to wear?
Ping could probably have saved themselves a fortune by just using the words “extremely comfortable”. Because it is. And it looks stylish too. You can get this in various shades of blue and white and the navy/poppy multi option – which I took to the course – absolutely looks the part.
The pattern is eye-catching without being ostentatious and the deep blue is very fetching indeed. It’s lightweight, no doubt as a result of the polyester and elastane mix that makes up most golf polo shirts these days, and even though I like to wear my tops on the slightly looser side it does stretch seamlessly and without feeling like it’s going to cut off the blood supply to your major organs. Overall, it’s a great fit.
The bold patterning belies what is actually a classic shape and collar, with a three-button placket that is largely concealed. It’s a nice twist if you’re looking for something that could never be described as plain, but still has a traditional look.

I’ve yet to wear this in the heat (most of my testing came over a golf weekend in East Lothian at the start of April) so I can’t yet attest to either its moisture wicking or UPF qualities. It’s said to offer ultra violet protection at factor 50 which, given I can start burning after minutes in the middle of July, would be most weclome.
What I can say is that it kept me warm and not overheated in coastal conditions which went from deep chill to spring-like in the space of a few hours. And when I was caught in a brief shower, which did not necessitate diving into my bag for a waterproof, it dried quickly afterwards.
I’ve got a massive phobia when it comes to golf equipment and an iron. There’s just been too many scorch marks over the years so the Ping Two Tone polo shirt’s crease-resistant qualities certainly raised an eyebrow.
Does it cut the mustard? It is wearable coming straight out of the wash but, depending on your sartorial standards, you may still want to brush an iron over it.
What’s it like when you’re swinging a club? Again, the whole process is simply one of comfort. The Ping Two Tone polo shirt doesn’t catch in the shoulders, nor does the neck and collar rub. You want a free-flowing movement, without restrictions, when you’re trying to hit the ball and you certainly get that here.
The labelling is also sensibly placed so I won’t in this case have to reach for the scissors to cut out the tags – as I do with a lot of golf apparel – to stop them irritating as I move.

There is no denying this is a classy garment in the clubhouse, and it will come into its own over the coming weeks as I’m gradually shedding outerlayers in the warmer weather. It’s smart, but eye-catching. It’s well fitted, easy to swing in and, from what I’ve experienced so far, regulates temperature well.
A good sign for me when I’ve bought a new piece of apparel is if I’m looking for it when it comes out of the wash – that I want to get it on again, rather than seeing it languishing in the back of the wardrobe. That’s certainly the case with the Ping Two Tone polo shirt and I’d be surprised if that doesn’t stay the case throughout the summer.
