Who will lift the Claret Jug in 2022?
Winning the British Open is one of the pinnacles of a career any golfer can experience and once again in 2022, there will be a whole host of big names vying for their piece of history.
Being played out at the home of the R&A on the iconic Old Course at St Andrews, it promises to be another spectacular weekend of golf on the Scottish links.
The 150th edition of The Open has been billed as one of the biggest in the event’s rich and fabled history and with less than six months to go until the first ball is struck in anger, attention naturally turns towards the key runners and riders at St Andrews.
Two men have dominated world golf for the past 12 months or so.
Current US Open champion and world number one Jon Rahm has been a pillar of consistency on both the PGA and European Tours in recent seasons and the Spaniard will be at the forefront of European hopes on the Old Course in 2022.
The other outstanding candidate is current Claret Jug holder, Collin Morikawa – who has two Grand Slam titles to his name and continues to impress on a weekly basis at every event he plays.
Spaniard Rahm is now firmly established as the world’s top golfer and his ability to always be in contention at every tournament he plays makes him stand out in a densely populated race at the top of the world rankings.
For all his promise and quality however, Rahm only has one major title to his name and how he would love to put that right at St Andrews, with the passionate Scottish support backing him to the hilt.
Rahm will begin the 150th edition of The Open as the ante-post favourite at 9.00 and he could be a tough man to stop if he finds his A-game on the links.
Meanwhile, current British Open champion Collin Morikawa cannot stop winning on any tour he finds himself playing and he will revel in the role of defending champion here at St Andrews.
He has an unwavering iron game, ideal for potentially tough conditions at the ‘home of golf’ and should he find his rhythm he could be a very tough man to stop.
Coming in at 11.00 odds set by US sportsbooks and Canadian bet365, he isn’t too far behind Rahm in the betting markets and both men will be ones to watch at St Andrews in July 2022.
Elsewhere in the market, there are a whole host of names that will be looking to do all they can to get their hands on the infamous Claret Jug.
Four-time major winner Brooks Koepka has endured an injury plagued couple of seasons but his appetite for winning is unrivalled and how he would love to add a Claret Jug to his Grand Slam collection.
Koepka is currently 14.00 to pick up his 5th major and should he stay fit between now and July, he should well be in contention at St Andrews.
American duo Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson have both tasted major glory in the past and look to be well equipped to deal with the challenges the Old Course at St Andrews can pose.
Spieth won this event back in 2015 and finished runner up in 2021, making him a strong shout at 15.00, whilst former Masters champion Johnson hits one of the best balls on the tour and represents the value punt at 18.00.
