Berkhamsted: Golf as nature intended

Berkhamsted’s claim to offer “golf as nature intended” is no empty slogan. This will be what you remember about your round there.

If you enjoy a natural and challenging golf course, you will love playing here.

Despite there being no bunkers don’t be fooled into thinking you’re off the hook. It’s tough. Really tough.

There are natural hollows, heather, and gorse everywhere. Berkhamsted forces players to plot their way around the course, so if you rely on distance, you’ll want to rethink your methods.

Most recently, Berkhamsted has just commissioned a new short game area by James Edwards, the renowned specialist. This will open in spring 2023.

History

Formed in 1890, Berkhamsted was originally a nine-hole course designed by Willie Park Jr.

In 1910, Harry Colt developed this into a full 18-hole layout and the course you play today was completed in 1925 by James Braid.

There aren’t many courses that can claim to have had these three giants of golf course architecture play their part in them…

What makes it special

There are no bunkers at Berkhamsted, and it’s rare to find a true heathland outside of Surrey and Berkshire in the south east of England.

This is what makes the course so unique. If you rely on power hitting you’re in for a long ride at Berkhamsted. The club recently invested heavily in new irrigation and course conditioning work, and going into 2022 locals are rating it as being in the best condition in living memory with fast, true greens.

Where does it rank?

94th in England, and 253rd in GB&I.

Where is it?

Berkhamsted Golf Club is situated just outside the town of Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire.
