Valderrama Masters fantasy picks

This week the European Tour heads to Spain for the Valderrama Masters. Sergio Garcia was victorious at this event last year, defeating Joost Luiten by a single shot.

Course form is hard to find here with last year being the first Valderrama Masters since 2011, in between that the course has only hosted the 2016 Open de Espana which was won by Andrew Johnston.

The aim of our fantasy game this year is to pick the right players to match the RankBuster. This week’s is set at 192 so who can you fit in your team to beat it? Here are my Valderrama Masters fantasy picks.

Sergio Garcia

Fantasy Rank: 1

It’s rare that a player will win a tournament back-to-back but it doesn’t mean you can ignore them, especially when you have a world class player like Garcia.

The Spaniard finished third in 2016 at the Open de Espana before delivering a victory last year. This will be Garcia’s first start since his Ryder Cup heroics in France.

Pablo Larrazabal

Fantasy Rank: 18

Larrazabal is another Spaniard who loves playing in his home country. Last year he opened up with a fantastic round of 67 but couldn’t capitalise on it and shot a pair of 73’s on Friday and Saturday before carding a final round of one under par to finish T12.

Ricardo Gouveia

Fantasy Rank: 25

A streaky player that has had some good finishes in the last few weeks which have included a T7 at his home event at the Portugal Masters and he comes off the back of a T9 finish in a relatively strong field at the British Masters.

Has made the cut the last two times he has played at Valderrama and finished T23 last year despite a disappointing final round of 74.

Julien Guerrier

Fantasy Rank: 18

The 33 year old hasn’t missed a cut since the Made in Denmark at the start of September. In that period he hasn’t finished outside the top 40 and has two top 25 finishes to his name.

Clement Sordet

Fantasy Rank: 48

The Frenchman has hit some good form since his missed cut at the KLM Open, finishing inside the top 40 in his last three starts with an improving record.

His form since his missed cut has been a T40 at the Portugal Masters, T28 at the Dunhill Links and T16 at the British Masters last week.

Oliver Farr

Fantasy Rank: 83

Last week’s sleeper pick of Robert Karlsson paid off with a T34 finish so I’ll be hoping for more of the same this week, if not better.

Despite his form prior to last week it’s hard to ignore a player with a high fantasy rank who is coming off the back of a T9 finish so Oliver Farr gets the nod this week.

Matthew Beedle

Matthew has been playing golf since he was around 13 and took up the game at a local nine-hole municipal course with his friends before joining Pontefract & District Golf Club just over the hedge.

Still a member of Pontefract with a handicap of 3, he currently sits on the board of directors to help with digital and marketing initiatives in order to improve membership and visitor income.

Matthew graduated university with a First Class in Sports Journalism from Leeds Trinity University and has been working in the golf industry since graduating.

NCG’s social media & marketing manager, Matthew’s main job role is to increase website traffic to the National Club Golfer website via our email and social media channels as well as driving entries to grow our NCG Top 100s Tour events amongst other tasks.

Not one to change his equipment too often, Matthew currently plays the TaylorMade M2 driver which has lasted the test of time in his bag. Elsewhere, you’ll find him using the TaylorMade Stealth 2 three-wood with a Ping G425 Crossover 2-iron to aid his long game.

Through his 4-iron to Gap Wedge, Matthew uses the Ping i500 irons accompanied by Ping’s Glide 3.0 56-degree and 60-degree wedges.

Another club that has stood the test of time in his bag is a Nike Method Core MC-3i putter which has had to have the SuperStroke grip changed at least three times. Ball of choice is the Titleist ProV1.
