Ryder Cup: Report card on Team USA

Disappointing effort given the quality of his debut at Medinah two years ago. Hard to understand why he didn’t get a game on Saturday but then again he was poor in his decisive singles against Donaldson.

Rickie Fowler

Eventually ran out of gas which was unsurprising because he gave so much in halving his first three games. In hindsight, should have been given a rest on Saturday afternoon because he was thrashed in his last two games. So would anyone against McIlroy in the singles though. Astonishing to think he still hasn’t won a match in the event.

Jim Furyk

The Ryder Cup just isn’t kind to him. His overall record is lamentable and even though he is rarely beaten easily he rarely seems to come out of tight matches with anything to show for it. So it was he lost to Garcia at the last in the singles.

Zach Johnson

Another of the experienced Americans who just didn’t deliver. Johnson was a force two years ago but here he lost two games in relatively meek fashion, and was conceded his half by Dubuisson.

Matt Kuchar

P4 W1 H0 L3

A real disappointment over the first two days, when he lost trhee times. Just the sort of senior player Captain Watson needed much, much more from. At least he came to the party in the singles, seeing off Bjorn with ease.

Hunter Mahan

P4 W1 H1 L2

Sat out the opening session but was then integral to the Americans’ chances. Stood up in the singles to take down in-form Rose, which was very much to his credit. All his pairs produced competent numbers, even if he lost two of them. Poor way to end, his dodgy chip reminding us of Celtic Manor four years ago.

Phil Mickelson

On the face of it, quite a good week for Mickelson. He won two points out of three, including a strong singles performance against Gallacher that was bettered only by McIlroy in terms of scoring. It is not just hindsight that tells us he should have been rested for the Friday foursomes and played on Saturday when he was badly missed. Not Captain Watson’s finest moment.

Patrick Reed

Sensational debut and had he not missed from a couple of feet on the 17th in the Saturday foursomes then it could have been four from four. Not many of his teammates would have seen off Stenson in the singles. On this evidence, he will very soon be one of the best five players in the world – officially.

Webb Simpson

Got the Ryder Cup off to an inauspicious start by roofing his opening drive on Friday morning. No birdies in the fourballs and then not seen until Sunday, where he did at least show some determination against Poulter.

Jordan Spieth

Hugely imprssive debut and his partnership with Reed was one for the future, surely, as well as the present. Understandably, but disappointingly, ran out of energy in the singles against McDowell when he let a four-hole lead slip.

Jimmy Walker

Brilliant on Friday, like his partner Fowler he struggled a little on Saturday and should have been rested for the foursomes. Deserved to come away with a win for his efforts though, and that duly came at the back of the field against Westwood. His scoring was as good as McIlroy’s in the singles.

Bubba Watson

Now lost all three Ryder Cup singles as well as his only one in the Presidents Cup. Was awful on opening morning and in singles. Played well in Saturday batterballs only to run into the hottest pair of the week in Stenson/Rose. Not what his captain was looking for.
