The news that Rory McIlroy had split with JP Fitzgerald after nine years on the bag didn’t come as a surprise to many golfing experts and fans across the globe.

For the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship, McIlroy has decided to hire Harry Diamond to caddie for him.

So who is he? Exactly. Let’s take a look…

Best man for the job?

Friends since childhood, Diamond was McIlroy’s best man when he married Erica Stoll earlier this year.

Remember the photograph of McIlroy in that Christmas jumper from a few years back? It was Diamond that tweeted it…

Another infamous piece of McIlroy clothing was his George Best shirt when he went to support Northern Ireland at Euro 2016. Diamond was part of the gang that headed to France that day…

Diamond has been on McIlroy’s bag before

Diamond has done the job before. Diamond has already caddied for the Northern Irishman on three separate occasions: During a practice round at the 2005 Irish Open, the 2011 Masters par-3 tournament (below) and the 2014 Alfred Dunhill Links (above).

Diamond has played in the Irish Open

Diamond is a plus-handicap golfer, so knows his way around a course.

He played in the 2012 Irish Open, qualifying by winning the West of Ireland Championship. He missed the cut at Royal Portrush after rounds of 77 and 74.

Will it be permanent?

It doesn’t look like it. The bookies have him as one of the favourites, but one of McIlroy’s reasons for parting ways with Fitzgerald was because “sometimes to preserve a personal relationship, you might have to sacrifice a professional one”.

Given that Diamond is McIlroy’s closest friend, will he risk ruining that?
