Read our special Celebration of Golf digital issue of NCG
For our ‘Celebration of Golf’ digital magazine we’ve invited stakeholders from across the golf industry to share their own golfing tales. We also bring you just some examples of the inspiring resilience that golf clubs, golfers and those working in golf have shown during this period.
Since very few businesses in the golf industry – large or small – are in a position to continue with their marketing plans right now, which is entirely understandable in the circumstances, we’ve offered free adverts all round.
We wanted to thank our advertisers for the loyalty they have shown to the magazine over the years.
We also wanted to do our bit and offer a gesture of support at a time when it is most needed. We all need each other’s help right now – that’s equally true of the golf industry as it is in our personal lives with our families and friends.
It’s a privilege to work in golf and one we certainly don’t take for granted.
There is also a rare bonus to be found in the magazine. I’m a proud member of the Association of Golf Writers and the organisation recently invited contributions about career highlights and memories from over the years.
My fellow members have covered majors going back to the 1950s and helped you get to know the greats of the game.
Given the nature of our Celebration of Golf issue, I asked if they’d mind me sharing their recollections to a wider audience and I’m delighted to say that they agreed.
We are therefore able to bring you anecdotes from some of the greats of golf journalism – like Donald Steel, Lewine Mair and Mitchell Platts and many more besides.
I know you will enjoy reading them.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the name that crops up more than any other in their contributions is that of Seve Ballesteros.
The Spaniard would have been celebrating his 63rd birthday on the day the Masters should have begun.
I’m sure you will join me in raising a metaphorical glass to Seve – and also to all us golfers. Let’s hope we’re also back in the 19th, as well as on the 18 that really count, before much longer.
