Wyndham Championship preview: Betting tips and TV Times

NCG Form Expert Barry Plummer outlines three players he thinks can challenge for the Wyndham Championship...

As we tick closer to the end of the PGA Tour season, we arrive once again at TPC Sedgefield for the Wyndham Championship. As the last stop before the FedEx Cup Play-offs being, expect this to be a hard-fought battle for those on the periphery and trying to make it to the Northern Trust. With that in mind, I have selected three players who I think can go well this week. But first…

Venue: Sedgefield Country Club, North Carolina, USA

Date: 12-15 August 2021

Course stats: Par 70; 7,086 yards

Course summary: Sedgefield is another famous Donald Ross design which has hosted the Wyndham since 2008. The smaller than average Bermuda grass greens will challenge the players’ accuracy and ability to hit greens in regulation consistently. This parkland track isn’t the longest on tour and will certainly play into the hands of accurate players who score low, with winning scores averaging around 20-under-par recently.

Purse: €6.4 million

Defending champion: Jim Herman (-21)

Wyndham Championship TV coverage

Thursday: Sky Sports Golf (Red Button) from 12pm, Sky Sports Golf from 7pm, and Sky Sports Main Event from 10pm
Friday: Sky Sports Golf (Red Button) from 12pm and Sky Sports Golf 7pm
Saturday: Sky Sports Golf (Red Button) from 1pm and Sky Sports Golf 7pm
Sunday: Sky Sports Golf (Red Button) from 1pm, Sky Sports Golf from 7pm, and Sky Sports Main Event from 10pm

Wyndham Championship betting tips

As usual I’m joined by Steve Carroll on the Dialled In podcast to discuss my picks for this and the Cazoo Classic on the European Tour. Listen using the player below or on your preferred podcast platform.

Don’t have time to listen? Here are three quick tips…

Bazza’s Banker: Russell Henley @ 33/1 with Bet365

After the late withdrawal of Louis Oosthuizen, I am pleased to get the opportunity to squeeze Russell Henley into the preview after he narrowly missed out first-time-around. Henley has been playing some excellent golf of late, with three top-20 finishes in his last four starts. The other was a missed cut at the Open Championship, which was actually a tad unlucky after two respectable rounds, so I can see him continuing that good run of form at a course where he finished 9th last year. Interestingly, Henley shot over par in just three of his last 14 rounds, with a couple of those coming on Sunday when in contention. That is no real surprise, as Henley hasn’t won since the Houston Open in 2017, but a lighter field this week could spell the end of that winless drought.

The outsider: Kevin Na @ 45/1 with Bet365

Na appears to have rediscovered his form of late, with a runner-up finish at the John Deere Classic and a respectable T23 finish last week. That may have come at just the right time, as Na travels to a course where he has played well previously. Na was 4th here in 2017, and 10th in 2016, and although that form spans back a number of years it may help to manifest some positive memories while he makes progress with his game. His short game has been exceptional recently, ranking 1st for SG: Around-the-green and 22nd for SG: Putting in his last couple of events, so I would not be surprised to see Na put in a solid effort at a big price.

The long shot: Martin Laird @ 225/1 with Bet365

If I was to tell you that you could get a player who has won on the PGA Tour this season, and is a four-time PGA Tour winner, at price above 200/1 on a course that suits his game – I am sure you would be interested. Well that is exactly what we have in the shape of Martin Laird. The Scotsman won the Shriners with a confident display back in November, and although he hasn’t had the best run of form recently not all courses will suit his style of play. Laird is very accurate, ranking 15th for Driving Accuracy and 24th for Greens-in-regulation this season, and that will be crucial here at Sedgefield. At a huge price, I am not expecting Laird to go and win the event by five – but he does appeal as an each-way bet with huge odds on offer if he turns up with his best stuff.
