PGA Tour boss Jay Monahan ‘recuperating from medical situation’
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has temporarily stepped aside from his duties to “recuperate from a medical situation.”
The tour and Monahan made a joint statement early on Wednesday morning, one day before the start of the US Open at Los Angeles Country Club.
Ron Price, Chief Operating Officer, and Tyler Dennis, Executive Vice President and President of the tour will take over “day-to-day” operations, “ensuring seamless continuity.”
“Our thoughts are with Jay and his family during his absence, and we wish him a speedy recovery,” Price and Dennis said in a statement.
“We have a strong and experienced leadership team in place and our priority is to support our players and continue the work underway to further lead the PGA Tour and golf’s future.”
This news comes a week after the tour announced a stunning merger with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia and the DP World Tour.
Monahan and PIF Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan appeared together in a television interview to present the details of the new alliance.
Having endured a “heated” players’ meeting at last week’s RBC Canadian Open in Toronto, Monahan has come under fire from some players who feel betrayed by the tour’s actions.
He also faced calls to leave his role as commissioner and he accepted he could be called a “hypocrite” after this significant U-turn to negotiate with the sovereign wealth fund that financially backs the LIV Golf League.
Many players revealed they only discovered the news when it was publicly announced for the first time. Rory McIlroy was also informed in the early morning of the story breaking.
The PIF is set to become a premier corporate sponsor of the PGA Tour and Al-Rumayyan will join Monahan, Ed Herhily, and Jimmy Dunne on the PGA Tour Policy Board.
Al-Rumayyan will also become the chairman of the unnamed new entity, while Monahan is set to be the CEO.
