North East: Manchester club destroyed by blaze
Northenden GC was destroyed by fire early on Sunday morning (Oct 19).
The club celebrated its centenary just last year, but a fire was discovered in the club house at around 5.15am.
An update on the club’s website said the club house was almost completely destroyed by the fire and Greater
Manchester fire officer Jon Crawley said: “When crews arrived at the premises the golf steward that lives on site had self-rescued and escaped uninjured.”
‘The two-storey building was well alight’ “Firefighters worked hard to tackle the fire using reel and a high volume pump. We also used an aerial appliance to get water in to the building from above.”
An investigation is being carried out by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to determine the cause of the fire, but due to the severe damage the building has now been deemed unsafe by a buildings inspector.
