Sir Nick Faldo felt the wrath of angry golf fans on the final day of this year's Masters. Now the six-time major champion has explained himself
Sir Nick Faldo says he made “a rookie mistake” after he accidentally spoiled the outcome of Rory McIlroy’s thrilling bunker shot on the 18th at the Masters on Sunday.
Faldo incensed golf fans watching on CBS when he mistakenly let slip that something epic had just taken place on the final hole, seconds before it was broadcast live to viewers.
“I don’t want to spoil it,” Faldo said minutes before the coverage cut to McIlroy in the sand, “but something incredible has just happened.”
The inevitable then happened as the Northern Irishman holed out from the trap for a thrilling finale to his Sunday 64.
Fortunately for us fans watching on Sky Sports, it remained an incredible, uninterrupted moment of sheer golfing class. But those across the pond, weren’t so lucky.
Explaining himself on the Dan Patrick Show, Faldo said: “I got caught up on that for a split second and I reacted in the heat of it. I seriously was shaking because I thought, ‘Rory is going to win the Green Jacket.’”
“That was a rookie mistake,” Faldo added. “I’ve been up there for 18-odd years, [and] that was my first cock up.”
