Ladies’ amateur champ takes Curtis Cup role
Lincolnshire Ladies’ county captain and seven times county champion Helen Hewlett has been appointed team manager of the GB&I teams for the Vagliano Trophy and Curtis Cup matches.
Skegness-born Hewlett, born Helen Dobson, had a successful amateur career before turning professional in 1990.
“I was absolutely delighted when I was called and it was suggested I manage the Vagliano and Curtis Cup teams,” said Hewlett. “I feel very honoured to have been asked and I’m really looking forward to working with both team captains Elaine and Claire, the LGU and the teams.
‘I feel very honoured to have been asked’ Hewlett won the Girls’ British Open Amateur Championship in 1987, before celebrating her best-ever year in 1989. She won the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship and was the first person to compete the double when she won the Ladies’ British stroke-play title later that season. In the same year she also won the English Ladies’ Amateur Championship, the English Girls’ Championship and was a member of the winning GB&I team in the Vagliano Trophy match. She also played in the Curtis Cup at Somerset Hills.
During nine years on the professional tour, Hewlett won the Ladies’ European Tour European Masters and the LPGA’s State Farm Classic.
The Vagliano Trophy matches will be played at Malone in Belfest on June 26-27, while next year’s Curtis Cup match is being held at Dun Laoghaire, near Dublin.
