Jason Day leads rain delayed Zurich Classic

Long Sunday expected to ensure weekend finish

Australian Jason Day share the lead with Erik Compton at a heavily rain delayed Zurich Classic, with bad light also affecting play in New Orleans.

Both men currently share the lead at 13-under with a group of four players, that include Justin Rose, sit a further shot behind.

“54 holes is not in the mix,” said Slugger White, PGA Tour vice president of rules and competitions.

A Monday finish will only be a possibility if serious delays were encountered: “We would be here Monday if we have (lengthy) delays,” said White.

With very few players able to complete their third rounds, Day admits it can be frustrating: I know that it’s very easy to get frustrated, and start getting angry at things that have gone on, especially with the weather.

“And it’s very easy to get frustrated out there on the golf course, too.

“But, you know, with everyone that’s getting frustrated, I know that I can’t get frustrated.

“I know I gotta somehow keep myself in it because there’s still a lot of golf holes left, still a lot of guys that can be aggressive out there and capitalize on a lot of birdies and make a lot of birdies out there.

“So just gotta kind of stay centered and keep pushing.”

“My main focus is just winning this week,” said Day, who won last year’s Cadillac Match Play.

“If I go into the WGC without a practice round, that’s fine.

As long as I come away with a win here, that’s all I’m worried about right now.”

Dustin Johnson was the last player to win an event shortened to 54 holes at the Tournament of Champions, with Johnson winning three of his tour titles at 54-hole events.

Rain has been forecast throughout Sunday and Monday in the New Orleans region.
