England Golf Round-up: Anderson's super seventh

Golf News

Tomasz Anderson's seventh win, Ashton Turner wins Darwin Salver, Matty Lamb and Dan O'Loughlin at Thunderbird International.

Hertforshire student Tomasz Anderson is celebrating his seventh title on the US college circuit, only a week after his sixth win.

The Brocket Hall 22-year-old is a student at Jacksonville State University and his latest victory came in the college’s home event, the Grub Mart Intercollegiate at Silver Lakes in Alabama.

Anderson shot 71, 69 and 70 and tied for medallist honours with Western Kentuky’s Brandon Beckham on six-under par.

In shared fifth place after two rounds, Anderson’s final score of 70 was the best in the field, with this seventh victory extending his own college record of college victories.

Anderson is a member of the England Golf men’s squad and is in the initial GB&I Walker Cup squad. He scored five wins from six on his England debut in last year’s Home Internationals in Wales.

Darwin Salver gives Turner a special double

Teenage international Ashton Turner pulled off a unique double when he scored an impressive four-shot win in the Darwin Salver at Rye.
‘This win means a great deal to me’ Turner, from Kenwick Park in Lincolnshire, is the only player to have two wins in the South of England Youths’ Championship, following his previous success in 2013.

“I’m honoured by that,” said Turner, who recently celebrated his 19th birthday. “Hopefully it will be three next year.

“This win means a great deal to me. It’s a really nice course and it gets the year off to a good start.”

Turner finished four shots clear of fellow international Ben Amor of Wiltshire, while Oliver Farrell of Worcestershire was third.

The round of the tournament came from Kent’s Freddie Price who cared 63 in the second round, equalling Tom Lewis’ course record, set in Open Championship qualifying in 2011.

Thunderbird International date for teenagers

Teenagers Matty Lamb and Dan O’Loughlin will represent England Golf in the prestigious Thunderbird International at Grayhawk, Arizona, from May 22-25.

Lamb, 16, from Hexham in Northumberland, is a member of the England Golf boys’ squad, has represented England since 2012 and was a member of the winning national team at the 2014 Boys’ Home Internationals.

O’Loughlin, also 16, from Ruddington Grange in Nottinghamshire, helped England’s U16 boys to wins over Wales and Scotland in last year’s series of internationals.

They will be aiming to follow in the footsteps of Max Orrin from North Foreland in Kent who made history in 2012 when he became the first English player to win this 54-hole junior event with a five-stroke winning margin.
