First Impressions
I should start by declaring that I am a big fan of Ecco shoes. The first pair I ever bought, over 10 years ago, are still the shoes I wear when I go to the driving range, and the S-Three have been one of my shoes of choice over the last eighteen months. So I was very excited to unwrap the M Golf Biom G5, their latest spiked model.
Out of the box, this shoe had a high quality, athletic & sporty look. There is an embossed performance leather upper with a mesh tongue which gives a modern and smart look.
I tested the boa version which comes at a £20 premium over the laced model. The boa comes in three colours; steel/black (tested here) white/black and white/regatta. I rather like the flashes of turquoise on the tongue and heel loop which offered some visual interest. I’m less sure about the boa button on the outer aspect of the shoe; I feel that it detracts from the overall appearance. There is very little in the way of branding; just some subtle wording, which I think is a good thing.
The textured leather upper feels soft and flexible. The boa lacing system looks a little fragile. The outsole features six so-called Zarma-Tour spikes situated around the periphery of the outsole with additional hybrid nubbins which makes the shoe look very grippy.
The UK size 7.5 (Euro 41) standard width fitted my usually sized 7.5 wide foot extremely snugly out of the box. Although there appeared too be less padding around the collar, the shoe felt very comfortable indeed and the boa system offered really precise adjustability. I think this model runs true to size. As with most Ecco footwear, you can remove the outsole if your feet are particularly wide.
On-course testing
Testing was carried out over two rounds in cold and dry conditions on my home heathland course. As you would expect from Ecco, the G5 was extremely comfortable straight out of the box. Although I’m not wild about the appearance of the boa, it really did give a close fit. And there is a whole load of hidden technology which combines to offer comfort, stability and rotational support.
All this technology really does work. There is a firm and slightly springy feel underfoot. The outsole offered excellent grip from the six cleats and hybrid traction bar configuration that Ecco calls its Dynamic Traction System. There was no hint of slipping even. when going for that extra few yards off the tee.
Testing was not carried out in the wet but I am confident that these shoes will be waterproof and breathable thanks to the Gore-Tex construction. A twelve month waterproof guarantee is offered.
The 19th hole
The spiked configuration and the appearance of the shoe really makes this an on-course shoe, although it is so comfortable that you’ll be in no rush to take them off after your round (or two).
I am not sure if the boa option is worth the extra £20 on what is already a quite pricey shoe. I do think it detracts from the look but that is offset by the really comfortable fit that I obtained. I guess it’s just a matter of personal preference.
I think the combination of the looks, comfort and performance means that this shoe will definitely be one that I wear over the next few months and beyond. The colour is suitable for winter use and Ecco offer a range of cleaning products on their website to keep your footwear in tip-top condition.
