As the latest free agent on tour Charl Schwartzel is taking advantage by putting a seriously mixed bag of clubs in play

Schwartzel is no longer a PXG staffer and now has an extremely interesting set of clubs in play. We take a look in the South African’s bag…

What’s in Schwartzel’s bag?

Schwartzel has a TaylorMade SIM driver at the top of his bag which he has paired with two Nike VR Pro fairway woods.

He has a Honma TW 747V driving iron and then a rather unusual set of Miura MB-001 irons which he bought and drilled holes in himself, yes you heard that right.

There is method behind the madness – the holes reduce the overall swing weighting of the club from D6 to D3 which required 3 grams of metal to be drilled out. He told golf.com more about how he customised the irons.

“When I bought them, they were too heavy, so I had to drill holes in them to get them lighter. That’s how they used to do it. I spoke with Nick Price and he used to build his own clubs back in the day. That was the only way — way back when they were playing — to get weight out. You have to drill holes.”

“I have my own drill press at home. It’s a normal steel drill that we use. It’s a hand-held drill. We held (the irons) on a piece of wood. I drilled holes, and then I would weigh it, and then I would drill holes until it’s the right weight.”

He carries two wedges a Titleist Vokey SM8 then a PXG 0311 Milled Grind Sugar Daddy lob wedge. The unusual equipment continues with this rather unique prototype PXG putter.
