Betting tips: Who wins the Tour Championship?

Our tipster picks out three to follow as the PGA Tour season reaches a climax

The winner: Jason Day

Should the sore back that forced his withdrawal from the BMW worry those putting their hard earned down on the Australian at this week’s Tour Championship?

Not at 10/1 it shouldn’t. Every week is a potential drama for the world number one, who has successfully conquered and played with injury over the past couple of years.

It’s the price that reels me in. Dustin Johnson is a good bet to have a solid week but, at double the price, I can’t seem to veer away from a guy who could have won both the PGA Championship and the Barclays and was in unstoppable form earlier on in the campaign.

His East Lake form (10-4-14-6-17) is solid enough and the PGA Tour’s best exponent with the flat-stick can boast a scoring average of 68.8 over his last 16 rounds in Georgia.

Double figures seems too big in such a short field.

The each-way back: Paul Casey

Tour Championship

One of two players to have FedEx destiny in his own hands – if he or DJ wins they will both land the jackpot – I feel like I’ve missed the boat a little bit on the Englishman.

But 16/1 still seems too big a price for a man who has boasted back-to-back runner-up finishes in the last two playoff events ahead of the Tour Championship.

With question marks and injuries still surrounding the form of Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Rory McIlroy, and with Adam Scott tormented on the greens, it is only punter perception, rather than reality, which has all of those players ahead of the 39-year-old in the market.

There’s a strong suspicion with Casey that he can get into the mix without getting it done – and only one PGA Tour victory would appear to back that up.

But given we are getting paid for the first four finishers, in a field of only 30, Casey’s strong form means he is almost a must-back for each-way money.

Two top 5s in his only appearances at East Lake (4th in 2010 and 5th in 2015) suggest he is right at home on the course as well.

The dark horse: Ryan Moore

Tour Championship

Bubba Watson might have been attending Ryder Cup practice meets but Ryan Moore can steal the final spot in the US team from right under his nose with a strong performance at East Lake.

Tied-64th at the BMW is slightly worrying given two previous top 10s at the Barclays and Deutsche Bank. It gives the impression that the petrol tank might be empty after the best part of two months on the go.

But, if he can rouse himself for another big week, then he has got the course form to defy his odds of 40/1.

Two visits to East Lake have brought two top 10s.

A winner of the John Deere Classic this season, he is used to being at the sharp end of affairs. He can be again here in the Tour Championship.

Steve Carroll
