Why we’d rather be playing this consistently high quality links course on the industrial North East coastline

Seaton Carew: The jewel on industrial Teesside that is outstandingly consistent

A jewel on industrial Teesside, Seaton Carew Golf Club has hosted many R&A and EGU events over its long and illustrious history.

The massive improvements that have been made to the course at Seaton Carew Golf Club, over the past couple of years, have once again been recognised by the golfing press. Over the last few years, the venue has catapulted itself into the top 50 in the NCG Top 100s: England list, while Seaton Carew is now a fixture of the NCG Top 100s: GB&I list as well.

Renowned golf architects MacKenzie & Ebert have been brought in in recent years to ensure that all future developments follow the design ethos of one the course’s earlier designers, Dr Alister MacKenzie. This will create a layout which will appeal to golfers of all standards whilst still providing a challenge applicable to modern championship golf.

History

The club’s history dates back to 1874, making the club the tenth oldest in England, though it was not originally named Seaton Carew.

It only became known as that in 1887, when a 14-hole layout was constructed at its current location. That was extended to 18 holes just a few years later.

The great Dr Alister MacKenzie, of Alwoodley and Moortown fame, proposed a new design for the course in 1925, into new sand dunes that had only recently been created.

Frank Pennink, another world-renowned golf course architect, was drafted in to add four new holes to the complex, which means Seaton Carew is the only 22-hole venue in the country.

Over the years, Seaton Carew has hosted a number of prestigious amateur events including two Brabazon Trophies and, as a celebration of the club’s 150th anniversary in 2024, it hosted the English Amateur Championships.

What makes Seaton Carew special?

Seaton Carew’s claim to fame is that it is the only club to have 22 holes, although only 18 are ever in play at any one time.

This quirk of fate allows the club to create several different course layouts, including the Old, the Micklem and the Brabazon. The latter two combine most of MacKenzie’s holes with the more recent creations of another great designer, Frank Pennink.

When you think of golf courses in industrial locations, Seascale and Seaton Carew are the two that come to mind. The former sits next to Sellafield Power Station, while Seaton Carew is to the north of Hartlepool Power Station.

Where does it rank?

93rd in GB&I, 41st in England, 1st in the North East, 2nd in England Value

Where is Seaton Carew Golf Club?

Seaton Carew Golf Club is just outside the town of Seaton Carew, on the northeastern coastline of England. Hartlepool is a couple of miles north, while the city of Middlesbrough is just to the south. The course sits next to Seaton Carew Beach and North Gare Beach, and just over the water from the Teesmouth National Nature Reserve.

For those travelling to the northeast by train, Seaton Carew Station is less than a mile from the golf club, with trains running through the station to Hexham and Newcastle.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
