If you want to take your practice to the course effectively, I always find it’s best to put yourself under a little pressure. This simple drill – which allows you to work on line, pace and green reading – is a great game to play which is sure to improve your putting…
Improve your putting with this pressure drill: The main points
The reason this works is that it encompasses every aspect of putting. Like many of us, who go to the range and hit balls aimlessly, I see the same being done on the putting green. Drills like this are so simple to set up and it’s amazing the benefit it could give to golfers of all abilities.
I’ve given myself a 12-footer here but it can be any length you want, really. Set up a gate halfway between the ball and cup by placing two tee pegs a putters width apart on the line you’ve picked. This will give you great feedback on your ability to consistently roll the ball on your intended path. It also acts as a great visual aid which golfers can use on the course. Every time you get it through the gate, give yourself a point.
And to help you work on the pace element, place a ball-marker roughly two-feet beyond the hole. Anytime the ball stops between the hole and this marker, you can have another point.
Playing it like a game allows you to keep score and build pressure into it as you attempt to achieve personal bests.
