Driver off the deck isn’t just a shot that you see on tv, played by the pros. Granted, it’s not one of the easiest shots in golf but it can certainly come in handy. How to Hit Driver Off The Deck

Hit Down

Unlike a typical driver, perched on top of a tee peg. A driver off the deck requires the same practices as a fairway wood, it should be thought of as a low-lofted big-headed 3-wood. Therefore, perhaps counter-intuitively, you’ve got to be hitting down on the ball a little bit. Most will see the lack of loft and be tempted to try and help it in the air – this will lead to tops and duffs.

Spine Angle

Spine angle during this type of shot should be maintained throughout his swing. As a result, it’s easier to stay on top of the ball and make solid contact.

Prepare for the Shape

A quick word of warning though for those rushing to the course to give this a go. If you’re a fader, proceed with caution. There’s a good chance your swing is already on the steep side so be prepared to take some rather large divots.

Driver Off The Deck: Pros

When Playing In Strong Winds

When playing in strong winds, a player may choose to hit driver off the deck as a way of keeping the ball lower. As a driver is the least lofted club in the bag, it has the lowest ball flight when played off of the ground.

Need More Distance From The Fairway

A driver off the deck might not fly as far as a fairway wood but it will often run a lot, due to the lack of spin. This means that on some longer holes where you need that extra bit of distance from the fairway, taking a driver can be a good choice.

Driver Off The Deck: Cons

It’s Tough

Driver is a low lofted club with a large head that is designed to be hit off of a tee peg. Therefore, it’s un-natural to hit it off the ground. Technique wise a couple of things are slightly different but it’s something that can be learnt.

Risky

A lot of golfer’s don’t practice this shot and so when it comes to giving it a go out on the course it can be a risk. Topping this shot is very common and so you could lose more than you could gain. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t master it with practice!

Conclusion

Perhaps one of the hardest shots in golf but a great one to be able to pull off. Driver off the deck can come in handy in many situations. Whether you’re battling the wind out on the links or just striving to reach a par 5. It’ll take some practice but it’s a really useful shot to have so give it a go and see how you get on.
