Beat your bogey holes: Moor Allerton 8th and 9th

James Savage continues his mission to lower his handicap with the help of Scott Oxley at J Whitaker golf

We’ve been saying it for a fair few weeks now, but I genuinely believe the golf season is just around the corner.

It’s always the way in this country that we get a few nice days and think spring has sprung only to be slapped in the face the following day with an icy wind or a heavy down pour.

Despite the false dawn, me and my coach Scott Oxley have been making it out on to the course at Moor Allerton each week and I’m pleased to report it is definitely a bit greener each time.

So far we’ve tackled the 19th, 27th, 12th and 14th – all challenging holes in their own way but Scott has helped me navigate them fairly successfully.

As I mentioned in a previous video, my nemesis tee shot (and therefore hole) seems to be the 8th at Moor Allerton.
Maybe a change of angle and attitude could be the key?” It’s the longest hole on the course with out of bounds to the right – a penalty which I really struggle to avoid.

My natural shot is left to right and although Scott has really helped me get to grips with it – I still have a tendency to get too much side spin on the ball which sends it right.

I know why this happens and it’s something I need to work harder on in practice to keep my swing path on the inside.

The wild slices don’t happen very often, but when they do, it always seems to be on the 8th tee.

So me and Scott headed out to see if he could help me face and deal with my demons.

The last thing I want to do is start aiming to far left as I feel that returns me to where I was before I started having lessons.

But maybe a change of angle and attitude could be the key?
