Rory McIlroy secured another big win in his illustrious career at the 2024 DP World Tour Championship, beating some of Europe’s best players in the season finale.
Again, he is on course to win the Race to Dubai, which would be the fourth time in a row. In 2024, he became the first player to win the Race to Dubai at least three times in a row since Colin Montgomerie. Staggeringly, Montgomerie won it seven times in a row between 1993 and 1999.
The DP World Tour Championship is also the second and final event of the DP World Tour Playoffs. The first event is the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship for the top 70 players in the Race to Dubai rankings.
The event, as ever, is being played on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. A winner of the DP World Tour Championship will be crowned, as well as the Race to Dubai winner (the season-long points champion).
As this is a Rolex Series event, the DP World Tour Championship has an elevated purse. It is the biggest purse of the season, and although it is still dwarfed by a signature event on the PGA Tour ($20 million purse), it is still the biggest earning opportunity for a DP World Tour member.
Tyrrell Hatton won the first Rolex Series event of the season, which was the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January. America’s Chris Gotterup then won the Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club, and Swede Alex Noren won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth for the second time in his career.
The purse for each Rolex Series event is $9 million, significantly more than each regular DP World Tour event.
The purse at the DP World Tour Championship is $10 million and has been since Jon Rahm won the event in 2022. The first-ever purse of this event, which was played for the first time in 2009 as the Dubai World Championship and won by Lee Westwood, was $7.5 million.
