  • Taylormade mg5 wedge review: the details

TaylorMade wedges have long played second fiddle to their drivers and irons, but with the launch of the MG5, the brand is making a clear statement. They’re now serious contenders in the short-game arena too. Following the success of the MG4, the MG5 arrives with much anticipation, so the question is simple, can it challenge the dominance of Vokey, Cleveland and Callaway in the wedge market? Read our TaylorMade MG5 wedge review to find out…

NCG SUMMARY

On the course, the MG5 performs superbly. It offers versatility in bunkers, from tight lies, and from rough, while providing excellent gapping alongside your irons. The combination of soft feel, raw face design, and high levels of spin makes it a wedge you can rely on in all situations.

While the MG5 sits at the higher end of the price bracket, the quality of performance more than justifies the investment. This is a wedge that looks outstanding, feels premium, and performs as well as any competitor on the market. For golfers seeking improved control, spin, and confidence around the greens, the MG5 is a great shout.

First Impressions

At address, I thought the MG5 is clean, sharp, and confidence-inspiring. The detailing on the sole and the forged stamping on the hosel reinforce that this is a wedge designed to compete with the very best. TaylorMade’s designers have tweaked the shaping subtly, but it still retains the classic look that we all loved in the MG4.

NCG Review

Out on the course, I found the MG5 delivers. Across my testing, the wedges produced some of the spinniest shots I had ever hit, even generating back spin on what were very firm greens. The 58° impressed me in bunkers and tight lies alike, while the 52° slotted seamlessly into iron gapping. I found the feel off the face is softer, more connected, and more precise than what the MG4 delivered.

It’s little wonder then that TaylorMade tour players have been quick to put the MG5 straight in their bags. I believe for the everyday golfer, the extra spin and versatility should translate into more scoring opportunities from 100 yards and in.

In terms of technology, TaylorMade’s big leap here is forging. The soft 1025 carbon steel construction delivers a noticeably softer, more responsive feel than its predecessor. Forging also allows tighter control over shaping, giving the MG5 a refined, tour-level profile.

The milled grooves have been redesigned with steeper walls to push right up against the legal limits for spin. Combined with the raw face and updated Spin Tread Technology, the MG5 delivers exceptional stopping power. In fact, TaylorMade claim a 13% spin increase in wet conditions compared to the MG4, a serious performance boost for us club golfers.

Grind options are another standout. With six sole grinds, crafted by master wedge maker Greg Cesario, the MG5 caters to both elite players and club golfers looking for versatility across turf conditions.

NCG Verdict

Overall, I think TaylorMade has raised the bar with the MG5. The move to a forged head puts this wedge firmly in the premium category, while innovations in spin technology and versatility make it one of the most exciting short-game tools on the market. I strongly believe that if you liked the MG4, you’ll love the MG5.
