TaylorMade is back with the fourth generation of their Milled Grind wedge. The previous Milled Grind 3 wedges were popular amongst golfers so I’m excited to see what the MG4 has to offer. I took them out on the course to find out how they perform.

If it’s good enough for Rory McIlroy, then it’s certainly good enough for me!

First Impressions
The big story behind TaylorMade’s fourth-generation Milled Grind wedges is more spin, especially in wet conditions. The rough and ready raw face technology is a big part of this. In a blindfolded test, the MG4 is found to be noticeably more abrasive than its MG3 counterpart. As well as the usual grooves, the face features raised micro ribs for more abrasion. The surface has also been upgraded to include hydro spin technology.
What is hydro spin technology? Deep cuts are etched into the 8620 carbon steel head. These cuts create channels that allow the water to escape when it is trapped between the ball and the wedge. Effectively meaning, water will interfere with shots less. For players, this means there will be a smaller gap between spin rates on wet and dry ground.
Not only is there texture on the face but on the sole too. This is because the MG4 features a milled sole, meaning that each wedge is the precise sole grind and bounce that it’s intended to be, as there is no chrome finish added.
In terms of aesthetics, there’s not a whole load that’s changed visibly, but there is a couple of notable things. The top line has been slightly more rounded with the blend into the hostel tidied up.
The flange has also been thickened slightly, which is the area at the back of the club that makes contact with the ground. This helps to enhance the sound and feel of shots.
Speaking of the back of the club, the MG4 also offers progressive toe thickness throughout the range of lofts.

The MG4 has also had a colour change, now supporting a green colourway on the MG4 wording. These wedges are also offered in both Tour Satin Chrome and Tour Matte Black finishes.
NCG Review
I haven’t had a fresh set of wedges in a while so I was very excited to get my hands on some fresh grooves. I got sent 50˚, 54˚, and 58˚ to test which are my usual wedge lofts, in a standard bounce.
I took the MG4s straight out on the course, and it’s safe to say that I was very impressed…
I really loved how the TaylorMade MG4 wedge sat behind the ball. They seemed to provide quite a bit of confidence for a player’s wedge.
All of the golf courses that I’ve been to recently have certainly been on the softer side, thanks to all of the rain. The wet conditions mean it’s ideal to throw pitch shots right up to the hole. The MG4 really showed its biting power on these shots as there was so much spin created from them. Even those shots around the green that nestled down in the grass didn’t seem to be as difficult as there seemed to be less turf interaction between the ball and the face.
One thing to note about these wedges is the raw face design. As I mentioned the texture is much rougher than you would find on any wedge and with that comes rust. Over time these wedges will rust, this might not be the look that every player is after, but it’s certainly nothing to be worried about as the club is designed to do that.
And of course, TaylorMade couldn’t release another Milled Grind wedge without having a TW grind. Tiger Wood’s created his own grind based on his personal preferences and it has run through the MG generations, making a return in 2023. This grind is only offered in the 56˚ and 60˚.
Overall, I really loved using these wedges. I really can’t fault them as they sound great off of the face, as well as providing an excellent feel both in bunkers and around the greens. These will firmly hold a place in my golf bag for the foreseeable future!
