NCG SUMMARY
These clubs deliver effortless distance and forgiveness for golfers who want a club that looks like a players’ iron but gives them some extra help around the golf course.
I love the updated shape and styling and think these look really classy in the golf bag but would have loved to see a slightly smaller shaping in the long irons.
PROS
- Great looking golf club
- Forgiving on miss-strikes
- Effortless distance
CONS
- Larger head in long irons that previous gen
TaylorMade P7CB Iron Review: First Impressions
I thought the previous 770s were good-looking clubs until I saw these. Somehow, TaylorMade has simplified the back of the club head and created a sleeker, more modern-looking club. Overall, I think they have nailed the aesthetics.

NCG Verdict
Last season, I got fitted into a combo set of the TaylorMade P7MC and P770 irons at The Kingdom at TaylorMade’s headquarters in Carlsbad. The irons were one of my favourite sets I’ve ever owned. I loved the precision and flight control of the MCs and the added height and ball speed of the 770s. So I was eager to see how the new 770s stacked up and what was different as, to be honest, I was completely happy with the performance of the previous series, and I wasn’t sure what else TaylorMade could add.
So, how do they compare to last year’s P770s in terms of performance?
Through the bag, it was immediately clear the ball was launching higher. This is key for golfers who struggle to hold greens and need more stopping power, as the extra height provided a steeper land angle, helping the ball stop quicker.
Below is my 7-iron data, which I was really pleased with in terms of carry distance, spin and control. You can see the spin is lower than the 7000 mark people traditionally use as a benchmark, nowadays balls launch so high you don’t need as much spin to help stop the ball.

I was really pleased with the control I got through the bag with these. Despite them being bigger than my current irons, I managed to hit plenty of three-quarter shots with the short irons, where I could control the ball flight, strike really well, and hit the ball very close to the pin, which is always nice!

My only slight complaint is with the sizing of the 4-iron. You can see the back of the club head behind the top line at address, which visually doesn’t appeal to me. I would say overall, through the set, these may be slightly larger than the previous P770s, but it is by very fine margins and the numbers show the irons launch higher and stop quicker than the previous generation which is a big plus point for me especially in the long irons if I want to stop the ball on the green.

How do they stack up against other TaylorMade P Series irons? I was also testing the new P7CB irons. In all realism, I would use a combo set of the two clubs. Below is the data comparing the P770 and the P7MB while out on the golf course. I was into a slight headwind, but I think this gives you a good picture of the differences in performance. The P770 4-iron flew 14 yards further and also went 19 feet higher.
Interestingly, my club head speed went up with this club, which I think was just because visually, the bigger size at the address gave me more confidence than the CB to swing hard at it and know the technology would help out with any miss-strikes.
Talking of miss-strikes, throughout the bag, I could visibly see and feel that the P770s were much more forgiving across the face than the P7CBs. So, if you strike it all over the face and want a club that will make you look good when you do so, these are a great option.

Overall, these are a great set of players’ distance irons. I suspect I will be gaming these in the long irons to go alongside some P7CB’s because they are so much easier to hit and launch in the long irons.
