When you think of classic players’ irons, PXG probably aren’t the first name that comes to mind. That is with good reason, as they certainly don’t have the appearance of a typical players’ iron, nor do they play like one.

It is no secret PXG produce some of the quickest irons of the market, but that they have historically lacked that premium feel and control. This is something that many golfers prefer to experience from their players’ irons.

There isn’t much these PXG PXG Gen8 0311 P irons don’t deliver. They offer everything a golfer could need from a set of players’ irons. Everything from strong ball speeds, a high launch and genuine forgiveness.
Despite their slightly larger head than what you would typically expect from players’ irons, they don’t feel especially big.

First Impressions
When you look at this club from the sole, it does look fairly thick, a meatier appearance than what a lot of players’ irons have. It’s a touch larger than the T model, the tour iron, in the Gen8 range.
But this isn’t much of a hinderance at all, in practice. PXG has cleverly disguised the size of the irons by the shaping of the topline. Because of this I was pleasantly surprised to find that they didn’t feel cumbersome at all behind the ball.
PXG has struck quite the balance in terms of supplying a more forgiving head but without the oversized look.
NCG Verdict
For me, one of the biggest improvements in the Gen8 range is feel, and the 0311 P benefits greatly from this.Â
The brand has clearly looked to develop these irons to have more control and a nicer feel, even on slightly thinned strikes.
I think the standout performance benefit of these irons is how easily they produce height and distance while maintaining playable spin. The tour irons in this range are long, but in typically PXG fashion, these are somehow even longer.
PXG has packed proprietary internal polymer into the hollow heads of these which helps to boost an increase in ball speeds to unlock these extra distances. This new tech also significantly improves sound and feel at impact.

Despite being long, these irons still launch high with steep descent angles.
I think its important to note that, although, the PXG Gen8 0311 Ps are players’ irons they are still considerably forgiving. The forgiveness is noticeable, particularly compared to more compact players irons, yet I was pleased to discover that it never felt like the control had been sacrificed.Â
This is a concern I have had in the past with PXG irons. With being so hot off the club face, I have found it a bit of a struggle at times to be able to exert sufficient stopping power when hitting into greens.
It’s nice to see this starting to be rectified and PXG being proactive about it.
Final Thoughts
If you are looking for a set of irons that sit slap bang in the middle of tour-style and game-improvement irons, then you really aren’t going to find many better. The Gen8 0311 P could be one of the most complete set of irons PXG has produced to date.
They launch high, generate strong ball speeds, but, crucially, still offer that improved control and feel we have been crying out for from PXG irons.
