NCG SUMMARY

It wasn’t long before it was clear that this was a high-speed tour ball that delivers exceptional distance, reliable spin control, and premium feel. The TaylorMade TP5x continues to lead the pack for faster swing players.

Throughout testing, I didn’t stumble across anything that this golf ball couldn’t do. It boasts all-round premium performance and it’s got the looks to match.

First Impressions

It can sometimes be hard to get excited about a new golf ball; after all, it is still the same shape and size and, ultimately, round and white. Well, for the most part, that is, we all know TaylorMade love a patterned golf ball.

Available in a range of visual options including yellow pix, white stripe, and traditional white, the TP5x also leverages TaylorMade’s Pix and ClearPath Alignment technology, which continues to be a standout feature for players who value help with putting alignment and visual feedback.

TaylorMade TP5x golf ball review

I think the Pix pattern version makes a lot of sense, and I like the fact the centre orange pattern is wider, as it gives you more visual feedback on the roll of the golf ball when putting. I also like how easy it is to identify my golf ball when using the Pix pattern! You might also have seen it out on Tour if a fan of Tommy Fleetwood.

The TP5x is the fastest iteration of TaylorMade’s flagship five-layer construction, featuring a new speed-wrapped coreaimed at producing lower spin off the driver and maximising ball speed. TaylorMade claims it’s half a club longer than its predecessor — and on test, that certainly seems to ring true.

NGC Verdict

I was impressed by the spin around the greens, being able to register 7,440 rpm on 50-yard pitch shots. While that’s not the highest spin I’ve seen in testing, this is still well within tour-level numbers, offering excellent control and stopping power on the greens. The TP5x feels soft off the face, and particularly responsive on delicate shots around the green. It was fun to use greenside.

TaylorMade TP5x Golf Ball Review

Using a 7-iron, my carry distances averaged 167 yards, even rolling out to 177 total. My ball speed was also consistently at 118 mph with a mid-spin profile of 5,624 rpm. The standout feature here for me is the control and predictability. This ball doesn’t balloon, and you’re getting every yard you’ve earned without sacrificing accuracy.

This is where the TP5x shines. The ball speed averaged 163 mph, with all my strikes within 0.9 mph of each other. The driver carry was 284 yards, reaching a total of 305 yards, which is a phenomenal result for those chasing extra yards.

Additionally, I found flight is penetrating with strong lift. It gave plenty of height without excess spin. Stability and consistency were the main takeaways and positives here.

TaylorMade TP5x Golf Ball Review

Overall, TaylorMade continues to push the envelope with the TP5x. It’s a premium golf ball that delivers serious distance gains off the tee while still giving players confidence around the greens. I think it’s a best fit for faster swing players who don’t want to compromise performance. It’s easy to see why it’s trusted on Tour by some of the biggest names in golf.

TaylorMade TP5x Golf Ball Review

I am a big fan of this golf ball. I have had it in play myself for a few years now and it has been a delight to use out on the golf course. If you’re after one ball to do it all, and especially if you’ve got the speed to match, the TP5x is a great option.

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
