First Impressions
I’ve always been drawn to Lyle and Scott. Probably because, as a slender man, their apparel is slim fitting, and the designs are bright, colourful and stand out on the golf course. I’ve been looking to add some stand-out garments to my wardrobe this year, so when the Seafoam quarter zip mid-layer turned up, I was pretty happy.
I tested the cactus green and stonewall green colourway, which looks really good. There is a dark navy and light navy option as well, but like most golfers, I have way too much black and blue at home already, so some green changes things up slightly for me.
Putting it on, it is really light and easy to move around in; it feels sporty, like a top you might go to the gym or run in. It fits my shoulders nicely and features a ribbed neck and cuffs and heavy duty front zip.
For me, the sleeves are a little long and hang down slightly over my hands and needed to be pulled up slightly before I play shots. This is probably because I’m broader than I am long so a bit of a funny shape. A regular medium-sized golfer would find this fits really nicely.
On The Course
I am 178cm ( 5ft 10) tall and weigh anywhere between 69-73kg depending on how much running and eating I am doing. In shirts and jumpers, slim fit generally suits me best, and I vary between a medium and a small, depending on the brand. Knowing that L&S generally tends to size slightly small, I ordered a medium that fits perfectly.

The Seafoam mid-layer is comfortable next to the skin and to swing in. It is their ‘regular fit’ which means it’s not super tight around the midsection and is a great relaxed fit. There is obviously no restriction in movement whilst wearing it.
I wore this on a sunny day up at Gullane in Scotland, and it was the perfect mid-layer for the occasion. It warmed up as I was chipping around the short game area so I slipped it into my bag and when it cooled down it came out of the bag uncreased and kept me warm in the strong breeze.
The 19th hole
There’s only one logo on the mid-layer on the left chest, which makes it subtle and appealing to me. Lyle & Scott is a well-known fashion brand so this could be worn around and about away from golf without people knowing it’s from the golf lineup.
I wore this sweater straight into the coffee shop after my game at Gullane, and it did not look out of place. This mid-layer is not clearly golfy in any way, so could quite easily be worn with a pair of jeans out for lunch in town without question.
This garment has now become a staple in my wardrobe. The green goes well with the assortment of chinos I have on rotation and it’s perfect for those warm days that feature golf and life away from golf. Golfers with an eye on style will want to add this to their collection.
