Abacus Tenby Longsleeve Top review: NCG Summary

4.5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

The Abacus Tenby long sleeve top is a very useful garment which can be worn as part of a layering system or as a standalone top. This is a really useful addition to your winter golfing wardrobe.

PROS

  • Soft and comfortable material
  • Stretchy and breathable
  • Flexible use

CONS

  • Styling won’t suit everyone

First Impressions

At first glance, this Tenby long-sleeve seemed a pretty unremarkable piece of kit. Yes, there is the trademark Abacus quality and finish but that was about all. It just goes to show how wrong first impressions can be, because this top has really grown on me, so read on to find out why.

The so-called Drycool fabric is lightweight and stretchy. As you can see from the accompanying pictures there is contrasting colour along the sleeves which gives a sporty look. There is a decent-length front zipper which has reflective piping, and there’s a chin guard for added comfort. The model we tested here is fog/melange, which is one of eight different colour options, so you’re sure to find something to suit.

On Course Testing

I am about 173cm tall and weigh about 74kg with an average (ie non-athletic) shape. I found the UK size 42 (large) fitted comfortably I’ve worn this top on a dozen or more occasions, and what really stands out is the flexibility of use that this garment offers.

I started off using it as I think it was intended to be used as a base or first layer. It’s not your typical compression or close-fitting type of base layer, but it is comfortable next to the skin, breathable, and, when zippered, up, nice and cosy. Furthermore, the stretchy fabric ensures that there is no restriction when swinging, and because of the lightweight construction it’s easy to layer over.

I have also worn this as a second layer (over a base layer and beneath a mid-layer) in cold conditions, again with excellent comfort and performance. Finally, it’s perfectly reasonable and feasible to wear this a single layer in warmer weather.

And the contrasting colours do really give the top a sporty look, although the cut (perhaps because I opted for Large rather than Medium) is quite relaxed.

The 19th hole

There’s a subtle Abacus logo on the collar and a distinctly less subtle ‘ abacus count on it’ motif adorning the right sleeve. I guess it’s just a question of whether you feel you can carry off that look. To my mind, the Tenby looks just fine when worn as a single layer when you have that post-round warming drink in the clubhouse.

I think that this is another really useful piece of gear from Abacus that I anticipate I’ll be using for golf and other outdoor activities in most seasons. It’s been through the wash several times, is easy to care for and, considering its flexibility, the price is very reasonable.
