To go along with their driver line-up, released earlier this year, PXG has announced a set of Black Ops irons. It is a big release for the company as it is their first-ever game improvement iron.
The iron joins the Black Ops family of drivers and metals. So what is the new story with the irons? Let’s take a deep dive.
The Technology
The Black Ops driver was designed to offer added forgiveness and the irons are no different. They target a higher handicapper, but PXG says they perform well for a wide variety of different level of players.
They are oversized in nature, the bigger profile is designed to give golfers more confidence stood over the ball. It also helps make these really easy to hit.

Explosive ball speed is delivered via numerous technological features. Firstly a high strength maraging steel technology which allows for the face of the club to be thinner than others on the market. In fact at its thinnest the face is just 0.050″ thick or 1.27mm.
The face also features PXG’s Power Channel Technology this is a U-shaped corridor built into the surface of the club face to increase deflection and increase speed.

Having this combined with PXG’s proprietary core increases the ball speed, as well as adding forgiveness, and a feel that PXG claims is better than that of forged irons.
The PXG Black Ops irons also feature a dual cavity design. This means both the main iron club head, and the rear outer badge have a hollow body cavity. The body of the club head is filled with PXG’s leading XCOR2 technology, which increases forgiveness on heel-toe and high-low mishits.
In making the irons easier to hit and more ideal for those with a higher handicap, PXG has lowered the CG of the club head and placed it far back. This will enable a high launch and low spin performance and make these clubs easier to hit for all golfers.
