Ping S159 Wedge Review: First Impressions
The Ping look
For golfers who have fond memories of Ping’s earlier wedge lines like me, the S159 will feel like a homecoming of sorts. To me, there’s an unmistakable Ping DNA in these wedges, but they’ve been brought into the modern era with sharper aesthetics and thoughtful performance upgrades.
Chrome or black
The straight leading edge is one of the standout visual features, lending confidence at address and simplifying alignment. I like how the club’s profile is clean, understated, and premium, especially appealing in the bag or behind the ball. It is available in two finishes, Hydropearl 2.0 Chrome and Midnight black, they certainly cater to both traditionalists and players who like a stealthy look.
NCG Verdict
Wheel-cut grooves
One of the headline technologies in the S159 is the introduction of “wheel-cut” grooves, tailored by loft. The grooves vary in shape and size depending on the wedge’s intended use. Lower-lofted wedges, like the 50° or 52°, are designed for full shots, while higher-lofted models, such as the 58° and 60° options, prioritise maximum spin on delicate greenside work.

Soft feel
The body is crafted from 8620 carbon steel, which helps to deliver what I thought was an exceptionally soft feel without sacrificing feedback. Around the greens, the wedge feels incredibly responsive. There’s a palpable sensation of the grooves gripping the ball, offering confidence when executing high-spin chips or pitches.
Passing the sand test
Out of bunkers, I used a 56°. It was excellent. I could feel the wedge glided through sand effortlessly, showing how grind and sole width work together to enhance forgiveness and playability.

Ping wedge fit app
Ping has also pushed boundaries off the course with their Wedge Fit App. By answering a few targeted questions about your game, from course conditions to swing tendencies, the app recommends an ideal wedge setup, including lofts, bounces, and grind options.

It’s an innovative, accessible tool that helps golfers get dialed in even without visiting a fitting center. At the moment, few competitors offer such a comprehensive online wedge fitting tool, and it demonstrates Ping’s commitment to tailored performance.
Final Verdict
A wedge for any handicap golfer
Overall, the Ping S159 wedge isn’t just a step forward, I think it’s a statement in the wedge market. It posses a refined feel, exceptional versatility, and is an all-round fitting tool that will empower golfers.
Whether you’re a scratch player looking to fine-tune your short game or a club golfer seeking consistency and control, the S159 should be at the top of your testing list.
