So who took the Ryder Cup style points on day one at Le Golf National?

Well, for me it was 1 up to Europe on the first tee of the first match when Justin Rose and Jon Rahm strolled out together in matching outfits.

In contrast, it was hard to tell Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau were on the same side.

And the theme continued throughout the day with Europe keeping it clean and simple but the USA team seemed to be playing alternate outfit rather than alternate shot in the afternoon.

I really struggled to keep track of the different combinations of outfits worn by Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas during their two matches on Friday.

But I’ll give it a go.

Things kicked off against Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton with Thomas opting for a padded jacket to protect him from the morning chill.

But it didn’t take long for the pair to be on message with matching jumpers.

However this was the first and only time we saw the pair wearing the same thing.

Into the afternoon, Thomas reappeared for the foursomes with a stripy polo and gilet combination while Spieth kept it simple once more.

But then the gilet was off.

Then Spieth took his jumper off. And put Thomas’ gilet on.

Are you keeping up? Me neither. And I have no idea where Thomas got this jumper from. Maybe it was thrown from the crowd.

He was wearing a fantastic pair of customised FootJoy icons though.

So in answer to my original question of who took the Ryder Cup style points on day one? It has to be Team Europe.

Thomas Bjorn gave Galvin Green very strict instructions for what he wanted with the team’s outerwear.

I’m not sure Jim Furyk’s Ralph Lauren order was quite as calculated.

It seems to me like he asked them to send every garment they had and they would do their best to try and wear it all.

And it think it’s fair to say the partnership of the day had their wardrobes and golf games synced perfectly.
