We visited Gainsborough to be custom fitted for the new irons

FIRST HIT: Ping G25 irons

Like all clubs in the new G25 range, the most striking thing about the irons is the looks.

There’s no doubt that previous G irons, while effective, have put off many due to their sheer chunkiness. Not any more. In fact, stick a ferrule on the join of head and shaft and, at a glance, you could be looking at an i20. In short, Ping have kept all the performance benefits of previous G irons but added to the aesthetic appeal.

A sleeker design features thinner top lines and moderate offset for a look that will appeal to anyone looking for a high-launching, extremely forgiving iron.

As a fairly high ball-hitter, my only problem was keeping the flight down. Otherwise, I’d be wanting to put a set of these in my bag very quickly. Even in the short irons, there is nothing off putting in the blade profile – Ping have clearly added playability and control.

In the longer irons, a couple of strikes out of the toe barely cost me a yard of distance.

"Ping have kept all the performance benefits of previous G irons but added to the aesthetic appeal."
According to Ping: “The engineers have created a long, forgiving design with exceptional feel and distance control while maintaining a sleeker profile. The high-performance model features progressive sole widths, thinner top lines and moderate offset which will appeal to golfers of all abilities. Among the advancements that delivers both forgiveness and feel is the repositioned Custom Tuning Port (CTP). By lowering the CTP and aligning it directly with the impact area, weight was saved and redistributed to position the center of gravity for easy launch and expand the perimeter weighting to ensure forgiveness.”

Just like the woods, these irons feature a dark, non-glare matt finish that is sure to find many admirers.
