Cobra King Speedzone irons: The Technology
The King Speedzone irons feature Cobra’s first-ever carbon fibre topline. This insert is 40 per cent lighter than steel, saving three grams of weight to be redistributed elsewhere in the clubhead.
Cobra have moved this down to lower the centre of gravity and provide an increase in ball speeds. The irons are designed with progressive head shapes, grooves and hosel lengths to optimise launch and spin throughout the set. They also feature extreme heel and toe weighting to again lower the centre of gravity and increase MOI and forgiveness.

Cobra’s 2020 iron line up also includes the Cobra King Forged tec set. These are muscle-back style irons which feature a hollow design that has helped Cobra lower the centre of gravity to maximise distance and forgiveness. Additionally, the hollow cavity is infused with energising foam microspheres that fine-tune the acoustics of the club-face creating a softer feel at impact.
The thin forged face insert, that Cobra call “pwrshell”, has been updated to create a larger sweet spot for higher launch and faster ball speeds in a players’ iron.
The clubs also feature a tungsten toe weight to centralise the centre of gravity behind the hitting zone to maximise distance and increase precision even on off centre strikes.
Cobra King Speedzone irons: The Results
These two sets are very different, with the King Speedzone model having quite an unusual shaping compared to the more traditional muscleback styling of the King Forged tec irons.

Over the ball my preference would be towards the King Forged tec irons, which are slightly slimmer with reduced offset. But I actually really liked the addition of the new carbon fibre topline on the King Speedzone irons. Not only does it look attractive over the ball but I’m a big fan of seeing new technology on the outside of a club.
Both irons are not necessarily what Andy or I would use but that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t benefit from the technology which is packed into these clubs. I gained distance with both – 10 yards with the King Forged Tec set and 13 yards with the King Speedzone. An impressive return which would benefit most golfers.
Another big thing about these clubs is they are really easy to launch. Golfers will be able to achieve optimal landing angles – allowing you to land your ball softly and better control distance. This is especially noticeable in the King Speedzone model due to the exceptionally low centre of gravity.
Cobra King Speedzone irons: NCG Verdict
The King Forged tec irons were definitely the set that suited me most due to the extra feel and workability. Having said that, I was still impressed with the feel off the face with the King Speedzone set. Having gained distance with both, these are definitely clubs worth trying if you’re looking for more distance in 2020.
