Srixon ZXiU Utility Iron Review: NCG Summary

What stood out to me most is the club’s ability to blend strong, penetrating ball flights with a surprisingly high launch and green-stopping spin. The feel off the face is solid and powerful, while the minimal offset and classic Srixon shaping give it a clean look behind the ball. The only minor drawback is the visibility of the rear flange at address, it won’t appeal to every traditionalist, but performance more than makes up for it.

I think this utility iron is best suited for low to mid handicappers seeking a reliable and forgiving long-iron alternative.

First Impressions

At address, I thought the ZXiU carries a clean, classic Srixon aesthetic. It’s visually consistent with the rest of the ZX line, blending seamlessly into a bag alongside ZXI5s or ZXI7s. While it does feature a noticeably larger head which means you can see the back edge behind the ball, I didn’t find this design choice to be overly intrusive. In fact, the mirrored back helps it disappear into the turf visually, softening the look while hinting at the forgiveness packed inside.

Feel-wise, I thought the iron was solid. Strikes from the centre deliver a strong, powerful sensation, which is exactly what you’d hope for from a club built to pierce through the wind and hold greens. Despite its tech-heavy construction, it maintains a traditional forged feel.

NCG Review

In terms of technology, the Srixon ZXiU is stacked with innovation. There is a forged body paired with tungsten weighting optimises CG placement for higher launch and improved forgiveness – critical for a longer iron with lower loft and extended shaft length. The MainFrame variable face thickness technology maximises ball speed, while the addition of a Tour VT sole, a first for a Srixon utility iron, enhances turf interaction. This helps to reduce digging and promotes cleaner strikes from a variety of lies.

I was impressed with the numbers I was able to extract from this iron. My average ball speed sat at around 138 mph, peaking at 141 mph. Spin was stable at approximately 3,500 rpm, with a pleasing descent angle of 41°, allowing the ball to land softly on greens. This is something that I find to be a rarity for many utility irons.

My carry distances averaged 215 yards, with total rollout up to 232 yards, all while maintaining consistent peak height at 94 feet. In short, this club delivers distance without sacrificing stopping power.

I also found the ZXiU to be as reliable as it is powerful. Whether launching it high into par 5s or flighting it down under the wind, it responds well. While the visible back edge may be off-putting to some, I do think the forgiveness and versatility it offers because of this is worth it.

With minimal offset and a clean top line, it’s a club you can shape and control, but also one that still gives you the margin of error when needed.
