Long, fun and easy to hit – a driver that anyone can get along with

Callaway XR Driver 2014

First impressions: I have to say I was quite surprised at the short turnaround time between the X2 Hot and the XR. The former was a huge success for Callaway and helped the brand re-establish itself as a market leader.

I loved the X2 Hot range so was keen to get stuck into the XR and see if Callaway had managed to make any tangible improvements.

A welcome splash of colour certainly elevates the looks and makes it stand out on the shelf.

What they say: The Callaway XR driver is all about speed. Outrageous speed. The R in XR is due to the fact it is inspired by the world of racing.

The extra speed comes from an aerodynamic crown and reducing 10 per cent of face weight to make it thinner. Extra speed also comes from the Project X LZ stock shaft which produces maximum shaft load during the downswing for greater energy transfer to the ball.

Golfers can choose from eight different loft and lie configurations to find the perfect launch.

The XR also comes in a pro version for better players which has a lower centre of gravity and can reduce spin by up to 300rpm.

NCG verdict: I found the XR driver incredibly easy and fun to use. The impressive ball speed numbers result in great distance and it is one of the sweetest sounding drivers out there.

A nice penetrating ball flight and one of the longest on test as you’d expect from a Callaway driver. The price is reasonable too.

I genuinely think they have taken the performance benefits of the X2 Hot and improved them. I definitely prefer the look on the sole which makes it one of the best looking drivers on the shelf. I’m not sure the design on the crown will suit everyone.
