PXG Xtreme Tour Golf Ball Review: NCG Summary

5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

There isn’t much I can fault the PXG Xtreme Tour golf ball with. The all-round performance is fantastic and hugely impressive, especially off the tee. With a driver in hand you’ll be able to power your way down the fairways. This is one of the quickest ball speeds I have recorded, ball testing this year and the yardages didn’t disappoint either.

On the greens there is also a premium feel, supplied by the urethane cover. This spins a touch less than PXG’s other tour ball, the X model, but there is still plenty of control available when attacking the pins.

PROS

  • Comparable distance with other premium balls
  • Exceptional performance off the tee
  • Optimal ball flight
  • Great value for money

First Impressions

PXG branding treads a fine line and this golf ball packaging is no different. Even down to the model name Xtreme, it is very sure of itself. The black, white and red box is bold and leaves you in doubt that PXG are taking their foray into the premium golf ball market seriously. I would I say I am relatively opened minded about choice of golf ball, having played a Titleist Pro V1 for a number of years, so I was very interested to see how this newcomer would perform.

PXG Xtreme Tour Golf Ball Review

PXG’s branding tends to be clean and that is no different with these golf balls. The logo and number combination is a classic golf ball aesthetic and the alignment aid on the side is a nice touch for battling the greens.

NCG Review

This was one of the most surprising ball testings I had conducted. The brand has included a 3 piece ball with a urethane cover so there is a lot of similarity with other premium balls in terms of construction.

I have to say I really enjoyed hitting this golf ball. It’s a tour golf ball and has that premium feel. As golfers you just know when a golf club or golf ball feels right and this certainly has that.

PXG has designed the Xtreme to fly flatter with less spin than that of the PXG Xtreme Tour X. The ball flight is promoted to be more penetrating in order to fly further for strong distances off the tee especially.

PXG Xtreme Tour Golf Ball Review

I was content with the performance on short, 50 yard approach shots. They came of the face off the wedge nicely and was able to produce a consistent carry distance to attack the heart of the green. I liked the way it felt and how grippy it was spinning off the grooves.

As you can see from the data below, the average spin rate of around 7000rpm was promising for good control on the greens. The launch was around where I wanted it, producing that desirable low ball flight but high spin rate. This is also a sign that the urethane cover is working with the golfer as well.

PXG Xtreme Tour Golf Ball Review

The data from the mid lofted irons is where I was most impressed with this ball. I was able to produce the highest speed I have had in a while, with an average ball speed of 119mph. The spin rate was slightly lower than optimum for my swing but not by much.

Positively, the ball was flying off the club face at a nice height whilst also remaining low enough for a strong carry distance. I was really pleased with how consistent the ball performed off the 7-iron, with the ball speed being the real standout, producing a tight dispersion.

Again the high speed was evident on all three driver strikes, all notching above 160mph. This helped to deliver an absolute monstrous carry yardages with an average of 286 yards. With an average total of 306 yards – this maybe the longest hitting ball I have tested this calendar year.

Overall, there isn’t much if anything I could fault with the performance of the PXG Xtreme Tour golf ball. It has all the commodities a club golfer could want. Performs well and is incredible value for money.

PXG has done some robot testing with this golf ball to pip it against the Titleist Pro V ranges, the results of which are on their website but for a quick spoiler it performs incredibly similar to the two leading golf balls on tour.

This is certainly a golf ball I can see putting in play.
