First impressions

I bow to nobody in my admiration of the gilet as a golfing garment. As somebody who plays year round, and whose favourite thing is a bracing round of links golf in the winter, you need to own the right apparel and high-quality technical garments like this are what makes it all possible.

They are the difference between shivering your way around and being able to concentrate on your game. They are the difference between feeling like you can’t hit full out and swinging at 100 percent.

They are the difference between looking scruffy and feeling smart.

Galvin Green Leroy Bodywarmer

Let’s deal with the technical stuff first. Galvin Green describe the Leroy as “a windproof and water-repellent full-zip vest with great comfort and top performance when needed”. It is made from an extremely breathable material with a water-repellent finish.

It has front pockets and an elastic drawstring. It comes with a one-year warranty.

In plain language? This is a seriously warm garment. As soon as you zip it up, you can feel the cosy warmth.

One of the many challenges of playing your best in the colder months is your muscles being warm enough to work properly. The Leroy means that is one fewer problem to worry about.

On-course testing

I made the mistake of donning the Leroy bodywarmer for the first time in the warmth of the locker room before I had put my shoes on. I was in danger of over-heating before I had made it to the 1st tee.

Once outside, there was none of that awful feeling as you make the first few swishes of the day when the temperature is barely above zero.

Galvin Green are really good at making apparel that doesn’t have excess fabric so you feel like there is nothing in your way when you are swinging. I felt cocooned yet simultaneously free to swing, which is exactly what you want on the golf course.

It’s worth saying that this is a piece you could just as easily wear to the office or on the school run or while walking the dog. Especially with the tonal logo that makes the branding much more subtle than many of us have become used to with Galvin Green.

And away from the course, you can also wear the Leroy Bodywarmer underneath a coat if you are going to be outside for a prolonged period of time.

It’s the kind of garment that you want to keep close to hand as you’ll be reaching for it for a variety of purposes.

The 19th hole

This Galvin Green Leroy bodywarmer is a wardrobe staple. Yes, it is a significant investment but this is the kind of garment you will get so much wear out of that I find it hard to be believe anyone would regret buying one. In my opinion, the quality of the garment and its durability actually make it very good value.
