Curtis Cup gets new date as R&A revamp summer schedule
The Curtis Cup has been rescheduled for August next year as the R&A announced further changes to their summer programme in the light of the coronavirus pandemic.
The biennial battle between the best women amateurs from Great Britain & Ireland and the United States was due to have been staged at Conwy earlier this month.
It was then initially pencilled in from September 3-5, 2021, at the Welsh links where it would have been played on the same week as the Solheim Cup, which will take place in Inverness, Ohio.
But it will now be played from August 26 to 28.
This year, the Women’s Amateur Championship has been moved from Kilmarnock (Barassie) and will now be played at West Lancashire from August 25-29. Barassie will host the 2021 event from June 8-12.
The Amateur Championship will be played solely at Royal Birkdale from August 25-30, while the R&A Girls’ Amateur, Boys’ Amateur and Women’s Senior Amateur championships have all been cancelled.
The R&A said the revised schedule would create a “strong run of amateur events”, starting with the Brabazon Trophy (August 18-21), and the English Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship (August 18-20).
They will be followed by The Amateur and Women’s Amateur Championships and the European Amateur Championship (September 2-5).
The European Amateur Team Championships will be played from September 9 to 12 and the European Ladies’ Amateur from September 30-October 3.
Duncan Weir, the R&A’s executive director of golf development and amateur championships, said: “We have listened to the feedback we received about the rescheduled dates for the Curtis Cup in 2021 and looked again at the schedule.
“We have moved the match forward by a week and introduced a Saturday finish to enable it to slot in ahead of the Solheim Cup. We are grateful for the assistance we have received from the USGA and hope this will offer the best outcome for the players of both teams. We look forward very much to welcoming them to Conwy in August next year.”
