Brora back from the brink after ‘overwhelming’ backing

And now for some positive news as Brora Golf Club are left stunned by worldwide support since their plight was revealed

A club who warned they may not survive the coronavirus pandemic say they have been overwhelmed by the incredible support shown by the golfing world.

Brora Golf Club sent a message to their near 600 members earlier this week with president Andy Stewart admitting the club “might not exist” after they had to close following the Government’s lockdown.

The renowned Highland links relies on visitor income and faces significant challenges with the cancellation of bookings.

All the club’s staff have been furloughed, other than three key members who are carrying out day-to-day operations to keep the club going and are working on a reduced salary.

But after Stewart’s message appeared on social media, the club have been inundated by heartfelt messages and offers of support from across the globe.

The Sutherland-based course, who have Tom Watson as an honorary member and are one of James Braid’s finest designs, have launched a host of new membership and merchandise options in a bid to stay afloat.

Asked about the worldwide support, Stewart said: “Surprised was the word. The original message we sent out was intended for our members and it was a great learning perspective about what can happen when people put something on social media and where it can go.

“The response since has been incredible. Over the last four or five years, we have been on a journey and we are beginning to realise just how special our golf course is and how it is perceived in the wider community.

“To have all that support arrive all at one time is quite incredible and really powerful”.

Brora Golf Club are focusing on the international market – offering a membership option for £323 – and golfers can also buy platinum and international lifetime memberships, as well as covering hole sponsorships and buying green fee vouchers, which can be redeemable in the future.

Stewart added: “We are fighting to ensure the very survival of the club. We need every member to do whatever they can do to help the club, such as paying their 2020 subscription, or even next year’s. They could also make a deposit on their bar card or pro shop account if in a position to do so.

“Like many clubs, we are asking for the support of our members and regular visitors at this difficult time. Hopefully we can make it through this crisis and can look forward to enjoying our cherished golf club and course in the future.”
