The Stromberg Men’s Weather Tech waterproof jacket was a joy to wear. I tested the dark blue version, which I really like the look of. It has a really clean aesthetic with some tidily placed Stromberg branding that sits parallel to the zip.

Usefully, the jacket comes equipped with two front pockets which have zips so you can easily store your valuables and keep them dry. Playing in the jacket was really easy, with no restriction on my swing, and it was incredibly lightweight, meaning it can go on over jumpers or be used as a thinner layer in summer.

It was really easy to slide on and off in time for the start and end of an unexpected shower, and due to the lightweight nature and flexibility, it was easy to pack the jacket away into my bag. It rolls up really easily and fits into the medium-sized pocket of your bag with no issues.  

Overall, I really like Stromberg’s latest Weather Tech waterproof jacket, it looks really smart, it is practical for all year around golf, and it sits at a really good price point for golf apparel.

The Pitch sits at the top of the range of waterproofs from Abacus and is an unashamedly premium product. It has a high waterproof rating of 20,000 and an industry-leading breathability score of 50,000. That means it is very waterproof and extremely breathable. The material is lightweight and offers 4-way stretch.  

Further features of the jacket include a rubber anti-slip print on the shoulders to aid bag carrying, adjustable drawcord closure at the neck and extra elastic at the sleeves to enhance the fit. 

I tend to size up in Abacus outerwear, and the Large fitted my 74kg, 173cm frame comfortably. On the course, the Pitch performs admirably. The technology of the fabric aims to optimize the body temperature (at 37.5’c), and I have to say it works. The apparel is waterproof, comfortable, easy to swing in and quiet. It’s worked well over a base and midlayer and on occasions, over a gilet as well. Furthermore, it packs away nice and compactly, which is an important consideration for those who carry their bag. 

It’s no surprise that the Pitch 37.5 has won several awards, and it comes highly recommended.

Waterproof jackets are a must if you are looking to play golf throughout the entirety of the winter season, especially in the UK. The Callaway Golf Stormguard III Waterproof Jacket allows you to do just that with its comfort and waterproof material, providing the perfect outer jacket for a game of golf in the cold, wind and rain.

The Stormguard III is waterproof to 15,000mm, perfect for playing in persistent rain. It also has a three-year waterproof warranty through Callaway themselves, proving how much they believe in its waterproof qualities.

Original Penguin Earl Full Zip Waterproof Jacket

The Original Penguin Golf Earl Full Zip Waterproof Jacket is constructed from polyester and polyurethane to create a moisture-wicking fabric.

The jacket is waterproof to 15,000mm, and thanks to OPG’s moisture management system, you should easily be able to spend four hours in constant rain out on the golf course without getting wet.

The jacket has two warm pockets so that you can keep your hands warm and dry throughout. It is also adjustable in two ways. The waist hem can be adjusted with toggles inside the jacket to make it tighter to the body. The wrist cuffs can then also be adjusted via a Velcro strap, to make it tighter.

The only slight issue I have with this waterproof jacket is that there is no hood. Admittedly, hoods are not often worn on the golf course, but if you’re not a hat-wearer, then wanting to put a hood up whilst in the rain is a must.

Due to the fabric and the sizing, the OPG Earl Full Zip Waterproof Jacket is very comfortable must-have, though, being tight but not restrictive to the golf swing.

The Puma Drylbl Rain Jacket is roomy and comfortable and will help you survive the tough winter months with no bother.

The StormCell extreme weather technology comes with a water-repellent finish, and it is designed to keep you protected from the wind and the rain on the golf course, as well as out and about in social settings.

This jacket comes with a full zip closure, which is beneficial for all golfers who want to adjust their fit at the top of the jacket. I thoroughly enjoyed wearing this jacket and I have full trust that I’ll be fully protected and covered when braving harsh weather conditions.

The pocket bag and the shell is 100% polyester and this jacket isn’t as heavy or as much of a burden as other jackets. It is light and thin, and it won’t feel like you’re wearing a waterproof garment as you play in the wind and the rain.

Abacus Mens
PDX waterproof

The PDX jacket is part of the premium X-series rage from Abacus and offers both waterproof and insulating properties. Features include heat-pressed quilt at the front (for insulation), 4-way stretch fabric to the sleeves, back and sides, a drawcord adjustable stand-up collar, drawstring at the body bottom and two roomy front pockets with waterproof zippers. All this adds up to a seriously practical and useful piece of apparel. It has a waterproof rating of 15,000 and the same score for breathability. Those figures aren’t quite up there with the Pitch but they are pretty reasonable. 

I tend to size up in Abacus outerwear and the Large fitted my 74kg, 173cm frame comfortably. On the course the PDX works well in appropriate conditions, namely the cooler and showery conditions so common for golfers in the UK. It is really comfortable to wear and works well over a base and midlayer. Due to the nature of the PDX, it’s very much an outer garment, so I don’t think it would work so well in heavy, persistent rain. That said, it’s another strong offering from Abacus and will get plenty of use on and off the course.

Ping SensorDry
S2 Pro

The first thing I noticed when putting on the PING SensorDry S2 Pro Jacket was the brushed tricot inner lining which provides both additional comfort and warmth. The only issue I did have with the lining, albeit a minor one, was it meant having to take my glove off to put the jacket on which is not ideal when it is raining. 

A feature I did like was the adjustable nature of the collars, neck and the shock cord on the hem, all of which felt like they were all contributing to minimising the opportunity for water to encroach. 

The jacket has a classic aesthetic and comes in a choice of colours meaning there should be something to suit everyone. Most importantly the PING SensorDry S2 Pro Jacket performed well in wet weather and allowed a freedom of movement that meant the golf swing was completely unrestricted, something I have not always found in other waterpoof jackets.

Sunderland Matterhorn waterproof jacket

Sunderland of Scotland has a long and proud history dating back over a hundred years. The Matterhorn jacket is described as ultra-lightweight yet high performing, constructed from a fabric that is breathable and windproof as well as waterproof.  

It has a waterproof rating of 8,000 and a breathability score of 5,000. At first glance, these scores seem somewhat modest compared with the competition, but Sunderland’s helpful waterproof guide suggests that these numbers are more than sufficient for golf activities. Features include two large fleece-lined pockets with zip closure, elastic storm cuffs with additional velcro closure and drawstring-adjustable waist and hem. There is also an inner chest pocket with velcro closure.  

The medium size fitted my 74kg, 173cm frame comfortably. Initially, I felt it was a little big, but with all the adjustability on offer, I was able to get it to fit neatly. On the course the Matterhorn works well. It feels to be at the warmer end of the waterproof range but is smart-looking and comfortable to wear and swing in. You can wear it over a couple of layers without any restrictions. It’s perhaps a little bulky to stow away and lacks a drawcord closure at the neck, but those are minor quibbles. 

Given the lifetime waterproof guarantee and reasonable price, this is a jacket well worth considering.

FootJoy HydroKnit Waterproof

The HydroKnit jacket is part of the FootJoy Hydroseries range, and this model is badged as offering fully waterproof, breathable protection for golfers in cool, windy and rainy conditions.   

In terms of waterproofness, it sits below the HydroTour and HydroLite, but it still offers a perfectly reasonable rating of 15,000 which means it will keep you dry in most conditions. It has sealed seams, DWR coating, two useful zippered side pockets and really comfortable elasticated cuffs. There is also a rarely seen feature in golf gear, namely a zippered inner chest pocket. I would have liked to see a drawcord closure at the neck and hem so you can really keep out the elements if the going gets tough but that’s a minor point. 

I’m 74kg and 173 cm tall. The medium size fitted nicely, and I could use the Hydroknit as a third layer. It looks good, is a pleasure to swing in due to the lightweight stretch fabric, and should you need to take it off, it stows away nice and compactly.  

So, this is a jacket for all but the most challenging conditions. It comes in a decent range of colours, has a 3-year waterproof warranty and offers good value.

Stuburt Evolution-PCT waterproof jacket

The Stuburt Evolution PCT Waterproof jacket was very impressive both in colour and performance. The Slate Grey colour is one of three you can choose from in this set. It offers excellent waterproof and breathable qualities and I found it to be very protective on the golf course. Having worn the jacket in both dry and wet conditions, I’ve had the benefit of both conditions and I was pleased with the freedom I found in this top. 

Despite the jacket being a medium, having opted for a smaller size than usual, this didn’t prove to be detrimental. I had maximum freedom of movement and I felt safe and secure when swinging in both dry and rainy, off-putting conditions. This jacket is made with DRI-Back membrane technology and has a 4000MM waterproof rating.

The jacket comes with elasticated cuffs and a waistband with zipped waist pockets. The waist pockets were very useful. They were tight to my body and this increased the insulation of this product when I put it on. My hands felt safe and secure when I slipped them into the pockets. All in all, this is a very solid jacket, with the only downside being its baggy make-up. The baggy sleeves, when worn with the baggy bottoms, made for a slightly noisy experience at times.

Oscar Jacobson Greylands waterproof jacket

After trying multiple waterproof jackets for the season ahead, the Oscar Jacobson Greylands option is by far my favourite. Lightweight, highly breathable and has an excellent design.

I tested the jacket over a couple of rounds, and whilst I don’t particularly enjoy playing golf in the rain, for round one, it did make for suitable testing conditions for the Greyland jacket! The garment performed excellently, and the taped seams and waterproof zipper kept me perfectly dry. Performance when playing wasn’t affected, despite being so water-tight there is ample mobility from the top to bottom of my swing.

Personally, I am a fan of plainer colours on the golf course, so this black and grey option was very easy on the eye. Additionally, the subtle OJ branding on the front and back, and hidden zipped pockets give the product a very premium and clean finish. Another helpful addition is the velcro straps on either side of the jacket are great for adjusting the tightness of the jacket around your stomach area.

Under Armour Stormproof 3.0 jacket

Firstly, the Under Armour Stormproof 3.0 jacket looks great and performs great. These are two main keys when looking for a waterproof jacket. I much prefer this bright colour option compared to the usual “tradtional” all-black look. 

The breathable 2.5-layer bonded fabric offers 100% waterproofness in those particular lasting storms without sacrificing any breathability. 

I’m a big fan of the adjustable wrist strap and being able to tighten the waterproof up around your lower arm area, particularly being someone who prefers the end of their jacket arms away from their glove so it is not in the way of my grip. 

My only personal drawback to this was that, as much as it helps keep you dry, I didn’t like the feel of the interior lining when not layered up. However, during the winter months, this wouldn’t be an issue if you’re wearing a jumper over your polo shirt.

This is the waterproof jacket you have been looking for. Available in both black and hemp colour options, it is light, breathable and extremely waterproof. As a bonus, it is made from 100% recycled materials!

I love wearing this jacket as it’s so light and nice to wear that I often wear it when it isn’t raining, as it offers great protection from all the elements.

I really like the adjustable sleeve cuffs that help keep water and the jacket off my grip, and it’s stretchy enough to be able to wear the correct fitted size. I love how it fits with the draw cord around the hem.

This is one of the best waterproof jackets I’ve ever tested. You will not regret buying this waterproof jacket for winter.

Galvin Green Albert – waterproof jacket

You get a couple of guarantees when you buy Galvin Green. One is the incredible warranty – which has no time limit. The second is you’ll be wearing a product of outstanding quality. 

So it is with the Albert waterproof jacket, which performs admirably in inclement conditions but looks the part on the course too. 

Lightweight, and with a full zip (always a plus when you’re trying to put on or remove quickly), velcro straps on the side of the chest allow you tighten, or loosen, the fit as required. 

The cuffs hang a little longer than I’d like over the wrists, but you can also tighten these, and the collar runs high over the neck preventing the worst of the weather slipping down the back. 

The Albert is incredible in horrible conditions. Rain simply bounces off the Gore-Tex fabric and the wind is buffeted away. 

But despite its impressive performance, £369 is an awful lot of money to pay for a jacket. If you can stump up, do so. You won’t regret it, but the price point will also hold plenty of people back.

 Abacus Men’s Links warm waterproof trousers

Abacus is a Swedish brand that has a strong tradition of producing weatherproof gear: so much so that they have clothed the last six European Solheim Cup teams. 

The Links warm waterproof trouser is badged as appropriate for wet weather in a variety of temperatures. It is made from a waterproof and breathable fabric with sealed seams. They are rated 10,000 for waterproofing and the same for breathability. This means they will combat most downpours and be breathable enough for golfing activities. The trousers have a brushed tricot lining for added warmth. There are four practical pockets and a two-button closure at the front. 

What I love about these trousers is their practicality and versatility. They fit nicely, the material is stretchy and breathable, and they have kept out the water on all the times I’ve worn them. On one occasion, I had to go out to play in filthy conditions, and I was able to layer a dedicated waterproof trouser over the Links without any difficulty. 

I first wore these trousers in April this year and certainly expect them to be a go-to piece of apparel over the upcoming cooler months. They come highly recommended!

The Pitch sits at the top of the range of waterproof apparel on offer from Abacus and is an unashamedly premium product. It has a high waterproof rating of 20,000 and an industry-leading breathability score of 50,000. That means it is very waterproof and extremely breathable. The material is lightweight and offers 4-way stretch.  

Further features of the trouser include two zippered front pockets and a single rear pocket, a velcro adjustable waistband and a zippered opening of the lower trouser up to the knee. 

I was pleased to see that a range of sizes is on offer. The 32 waist, short leg fitted nicely. On the course the Pitch performs admirably. The technology of the fabric aims to optimize the body temperature (at 37.5’c) and it works. The apparel is waterproof, comfortable, easy to swing in and quiet.  

The pocket configuration was a bit fiddly. The front pockets are rather small to access, and there is an opening, with velcro closure, that allows you to access trouser pockets beneath. But that’s a minor consideration for what is an otherwise excellent product.

The HydroLite rain trousers are part of the FootJoy Hydroseries range, and this model is badged as offering 100% waterproof, breathable protection for golfers in mild, windy and rainy conditions.

I’m 74kg and 173 cm tall. The medium size fitted nicely, and there is a choice of three leg lengths. On the course I felt that the velcro/zip closure at the trouser bottoms was a little narrow, which made it awkward to put on or take off the trousers mid-round. The pockets didn’t allow access to trousers/shorts worn beneath and lacked zip/velcro closure. Other than that, the HydroLite trousers were comfortable to wear due to the stretchy fabric. 

In summary, I think these trousers work in all but the most challenging conditions. They have a 3-year waterproof warranty and offer good value.

 Sunderland Quebec Men’s Waterproof Golf Trousers

The Quebec waterproof trousers are the top of the range offering from Sunderland. They are made from a soft ‘Neverweatherbeaten’ fabric that is waterproof and warm, yet also breathable. 

They come with a waterproof rating of 8,000 and a breathability score of 5,000. At first glance, these scores seem modest compared with some competitor brands, but Sunderland’s helpful waterproof guide suggests that these numbers are more than sufficient for golf activities. Features include an adjustable and elasticated (but no gripper) waistband, large self-contained, fleece lined pockets (which do not pass through to trousers beneath), a rear pocket with velcro flap and protective tape at the bottom of the trousers for added durability. 

The trousers fitted true to size if worn as a standalone trouser but you might want to go up a waist size if you’re likely to be wearing these as a second layer. There is an impressive choice of no less than four leg lengths. As with the Matterhorn jacket , these felt to be at the warmer end of the waterproof range so are more useful in colder conditions. They feel to be well made and yet do fold up reasonably compactly. 

In summary, I think these trousers will work best in colder wet conditions. They have a lifetime waterproof guarantee and are very good value.

There is nothing sexy about a pair of waterproof trousers. They are a necessary inclusion in your winter golf bag but not often something a golfer is pleased to put on or enjoy wearing.

The Adidas Rain.rdy golf trousers are super lightweight and easy to get on and off. I actually would be pretty happy wearing them with shorts or even nothing underneath as they aren’t super baggy and a terrible fit like most pairs of waterproof trousers.

They are extremely waterproof and I really like how quiet the trousers are when on and marching around a wet golf course.

The zip pockets offer another layer of protection from the rain too.

You will not find a better value for money pair of waterproof trousers, in my opinion, this winter.

Under Armour Stormproof Waterproof Trousers

The Under Armour Drive Rain Pants are a great option if you’re looking for your next pair of waterproof trousers. 

There main objective is to keep you dry, and they precisely do just that thanks to Storm technology, but the durable, smooth exterior offers a lightweight feel. 

Practically, they perform exactly as your regular waterproof trousers with two zipped hand pockets and a reverse back pocket. 

The waterproof trousers contain two adjustable straps around the waist which is great considering most waterproofs can often be on the larger side. The bottom of the legs also contain zips and a two-button setting. 

My only personal drawback to this was that, as much as it helps keep you dry, I didn’t like the feel of the interior lining when not layered up. However, during the winter months, this wouldn’t be an issue if you’re wearing another pair of trousers underneath your waterproof ones.

This pair of waterproof pants goes perfectly with the Puma DYLBL Rain Jacket. Even with a pair of trousers on, or if you prefer to wear waterproof trousers over some shorts, I didn’t find the fit too much to handle.

Especially around waist, these pants were very forgiving and as the rain came down, my swing or stance didn’t feel restricted, which can often be the case with other pairs of waterproof bottoms.

The pockets are uniquely designed so that the opening of the hole is still covered to protect your belongings and golf accessories from any rainfall.

The colour is purely black, but this is all you need, and all I want, when it comes to playing golf in the rain.

The bottom of the trousers was roomy and gave my feet and ankles some relief.

You have some flexibility at the bottom with the zip on either side in case you need to loosen the grip around your legs – another favourable feature of these impressive waterproof pants.

I often find with waterproof trousers that they are oversized and baggy, owing to the fact they are usually worn over another pair of trousers. What I particularly like about the PING SensorDry Trouser is the fit. They have a fully elasticated waist but still have a performance fit and feel to them. The waist can still be adjusted with a hidden adjustable cord, though I did not find this necessary. 

An essential for waterproofs is that they are easy to slip on over shoes when caught short in the rain and the ankle zip comes up to just below the knee meaning that is the case with the SensorDry. 

Lastly the stretch material used is unrestrictive and makes the trouser very breathable. These trousers are a great lightweight option and ones I would highly recommend.

Oscar Jacobson Portland Waterproof Trousers

The Oscar Jacobson Portland waterproof trousers are ideal for the imminent wet weather golf season.

Fully taped seams and waterproof zippers are built in for perfect water resistance.

I tested the black version but they are also available in navy, there is plenty of storage with two large front pockets and the same on the back.

The detail on the trousers is excellent, elasticated waist band with belt loops that adjust easily.

Similarly on the cuffs of the trousers there is a large zip and two buttons to adjust the cuff size to make it nice and easy to slip your trousers on if you get caught short with some bad weather.

I personally prefer slimmer fit trousers so saying they are baggy may be unfair, however the bottom half of the trouser does flare out a little more than I would prefer. That is just personal preference and overall, the trousers have a really clean design and are very practical.

Galvin Green Arthur – waterproof pants

There has hardly seemed a time when Galvin Green haven’t dominated the waterproof market. They genuinely changed the game and you open their product and just expect quality. 

In that sense, the Arthur carries on the tradition. They make you indestructible in the worst of the weather. Breathable, hard-wearing but light, there is nothing the elements can throw at you that you cannot withstand. 

I would say to be a little mindful of the sizing. I’m a small medium and these were still slightly tight round the waist. That’s without a trouser belt getting in the way. 

But, that aside, the Arthur’s sleek design, and fabulous performance, continues to set the standard in what to expect in waterproof trousers.
