Seve course hosts Special Olympics tournament
The Shire London played host to a spectacle of good golf and sportsmanship when the Seve Ballesteros-designed course put on the Special Olympics National Tournament.
Special Olympics Great Britain athletes took to the course in bright sunshine for a ‘divisioning’ day, before the main competition occurred the following day.
‘The game of golf takes a battering for a lot of the wrong reasons’ Cae Menai-Davis, co-founder of The Golf Trust, said: “The game of golf takes a battering for a lot of the wrong reasons, when in fact it truly is the most inclusive game out there. The Special Olympics athletes played the game with the highest sportsmanship while maintaining the competitive edge and it was a privilege to see all the smiling faces from everyone at the end of play.
“Without the huge network of support from everyone at the end of play. Without the huge network of support from volunteers and coaches, events like this would not be possible. It is a welcome breath of fresh air that the game of golf is crying out for.”
Families and supports came out in full force to see the athletes which had been put into two divisions.
At the close of the second day, the presentation was made by Menai-Davis with Gareth Elms, Mikael Undrom and Neil Samuels being announced as the winners of their respective divisions.
