Gary Nicol’s Short Game Secrets: The long greenside bunker shot
In our quest to learn how to improve shot selection, the Golf Shack Academy on tour found our way to Archerfield Links in Scotland.
While there, we caught up with Gary Nicol, European Tour coach at TPEGS coaching, also based at Archerfield.
Bunker play can often be the nemesis of professional golfers as well as amateurs. Here, Gary talks about the long greenside bunker shots and how you should approach them.

We can make this shot a whole lot easier if we use the right club.
For this shot you don’t want to use your 56 or 60 degree wedge because it will result in you taking too much of a big swing to try and get the ball all the way to the hole.
You want to try and get the ball to come out of the sand a little bit lower than normal to make sure it runs out and doesn’t spin too much.
