South Staffs Golf Club

Wolverhampton, Staffordshire

One of the best courses the Midlands has to offer
South Staffordshire was originally formed in 1892, making it one of the oldest in the Midlands.

It began life as a nine-hole layout on Penn Common before nine holes were added six years later.

The club moved to its current site in 1908 and six-time Open champion Harry Vardon was commissioned to design the new layout.

For the club’s centenary five years ago it launched a new open tournament, the Vardon Bowl.

The club has a 10-acre driving range and practice area for its members and visitors.

Such luminaries as Vardon, Harry Colt, James Braid and Donald Steel have all had a hand in the design of the course and their efforts are well rewarded at what is one of the finest courses in the area.
For a birdie chance, look to the par-5 5th. It is the Stroke Index 1 but this might be your best chance of picking up a shot.
Set in 160 acres of rolling parkland, it can play as long as 6,587 yards off the new black tees with a tight par of 71. The middle stretch, holes 7 to 14, provides six par 4s at well over 400 yards.

The 9th is a tough par 4 of over 450 yards with out of bounds down the right and trees both left and right to focus your attention.

It requires two very good hits to get on in two and, if you come up short, there are bunkers waiting from 10-30 yards short.

The fairway slopes from left to right while the wind also tends to come off the left.

For a birdie chance, look to the par-5 5th. It is Stroke Index 1 but may actually be your best chance of picking up a shot.

It is a narrow tee shot and the hole runs from right to left but, if you can get your drive right, the green will be within range.
