England teams selected for Spanish Nations Cup
Three teams will represent England Golf in the Nations Cup event at the Spanish amateur championship next week.
All nine players are members of the Engalnd Golf men’s squad and all are existing internationals. The Spanish amateur championship takes place from Wednesday February25 to Sunday March 1 and after two rounds of stroke play qualifying, the leading 32 players will go forward to the match play.
The Nations Cup will be played on the qualifying days when each team’s best two scores will count in both rounds.
Team one:
Ashley Chesters, 25, Hawkstone Park, is the double European amateur champion and this season has had top 10 finished is in the Portuguese and South American amateur championships.
Nick Marsh, 20, Huddersfiled, won the 2014 English amateur championship, was in a playoff for the Portuguese title and tied second in the Scottish stroke play. This season he was the top qualifier for the matchplay stages of the Australian amateur.
Ben Stow, 23, Rushmore, is the reigning Brabazon Trophy champion and was also a winner on the US college circuit when he was a student in Kentucky.
Team two:
Adam Chapman, 19, Windermere, completed a title double last year when he won both the North of England and South of England championships.
Jimmy Mullen, 21, Royal North Devon, won the Duncan Putter in Wales last year, was also runner-up in the West of England stroke play, third in the South American amateur and reached the last 16 of the US amateur.
Luke Johnson, 22, King’s Lynn, won the Berkhamsted Trophy and the West of England stroke play.
Team three:
Paul Kinnear, 21, Formby, was part of the winning team in the Costa Ballena Quadrangular match in 2014 and had a top 20 finish in this season’s Portuguese amateur.
Joe Dean, 20, Lindrick, leads the England Golf men’s Order of Merit, having tied fourth in the recent Portuguese amateur and secured a top 20 finish in the South American championship.
Michael Saunders, 24, Dartford, is a past winner of the Lagonda Trophy who tied second in the same event last year and was also joint third in the Welsh stroke play.
