Eye-catching
TaylorMade has once again pushed the boundaries of wedge design with the Hi-Toe 4. They have produced what is arguably one of the most eye-catching and versatile wedges on the market. The copper finish is bold yet classy, giving the wedge an unmistakable tour-inspired aesthetic. Small milling details across the back offer subtle touches that reinforce the club’s premium craftsmanship. For many, this wedge will be “bag-ready” on looks alone.

Excitement pre-test
I have used TaylorMade wedges for the better part of two years now, and I have seen no need to change away from one of golf’s biggest brands. They tick all boxes for what you need in a wedge; feel, spin and longevity. So, I was excited to see how the new Hi-toes perform.
Full face grooves
The Hi-Toe wedge range are a series of wedges with full-face grooves. The idea of this is that the golfer using them is going to open the face up quite a lot to play lob shots, etc. Moving the mass and adding grooves to the toe is going to increase the spin and therefore the control around the greens.
Strong all round performance
During my testing of this wedge, I made sure to cover a range of short chips, flop shots, bunkers, and pitch shots from 40–70 yards. The result was that I found the Hi-Toe 4 performed at the top end of the category across all metrics. Spin was consistent and aggressive, with the raw face offering that desirable “grab” on well-struck shots.

Raw face – but what does it mean and do?
We have heard for a while now about Tour players using raw wedges. This basically means that their wedges are without any chrome plating, which is to help improve the feel. If you ever take a look at a PGA Tour golfers wedge, they almost look a tad rusty. This is a result of the removal of the chrome plating.
TaylorMade have included a raw face in this offering whilst preventing the back of the club head from going rusty. The raw face increases the friction between the club and the ball to increase the spin rate.
Mill Grind aids performance
One of the standout features, I thought, was the Mill Grind Sole. This CNC-milled sole ensures precise shaping and turf interaction. Whether off tight lies or in fluffy sand, the club glides effortlessly, with excellent heel relief making it easy to open the face and still strike cleanly.
Plenty of forgiveness
The wedge is also surprisingly forgiving. Those who don’t carry a large variety of wedges will appreciate its ability to handle a broad spectrum of shots with confidence. It is a true workhorse for the short game enthusiast.
Final Verdict
Vokey or Hi-Toe 4?
Overall, I think it’s fair to say that if you’ve traditionally leaned toward more mainstream wedge models like the Vokey, the Hi-Toe 4 might just change your mind. Its combination of performance, looks, and feel make it one of the most complete wedge offerings on the market today.
