HimmerLand | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

HimmerLand is one of the leading golfing venues in the entirety of Scandinavia. It is one of two Danish venues on the NCG Top 100 European Golf Resorts list and it is easy to see why. There are two stunning 18-hole golf courses, a six-hole par-3 Academy Course, plenty of other sports to choose from, a spa and wellness facility, and a glorious array of accommodation options.

Starting with the golf, which was first conceived at HimmerLand in the 1970s. The Old Course paved the way for the New Course to be built later on, and the latter has now hosted the Made in HimmerLand on the DP World Tour on multiple occasions. It is, without doubt, one of the best combinations of golf courses in Scandinavia, and the two are well complemented by the six-hole Academy Course.

The Academy Course provides the perfect setting for beginners who are getting into golf. There are six par-3s, with a few water hazards and bunkers to watch out for, while each hole has three tees so it can be played as an 18-hole course. The Golf Academy at HimmerLand also features a stunning driving range and a great short game area, with the latter including a couple of greens and bunkers to practise from.

Tennis, Padel, football, bowling, mini-golf and a range of outdoor activities, such as mountain biking and watersports are also available to enjoy during a stay at HimmerLand. There is a fitness centre for those that like staying active, while the HimmerLand Spa provides the ultimate relaxation for those who want to unwind.

When it comes to accommodation, HimmerLand has it covered. The HimmerLand Hotel features a range of Standard and Superior Rooms, both of which also come in Family options, while there is a stunning array of newly-constructed Suites which offer glorious views of the 18th hole on both the Old and New Courses. At the north of the property, there are more than 150 cottages which can be rented out for a more private stay, sleeping between four and six people.

If you’re looking at taking a trip to somewhere slightly different than the usual Spain, Portugal or Turkey holidays, but you still want to play a fine championship course, then HimmerLand is certainly one that should be on the list.

HimmerLand Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Two Epic Courses

The HimmerLand Resort is proud to be the home of two stunning golf 18-hole golf courses - the Old Course and the New Course. The Old Course at HimmerLand has been around for more than six decades now, while the New Course has become the championship lay-out at the venue. The 18th hole of both golf courses are brought together with a double green in front of the clubhouse and hotel.

New Course
The New Course has become one of the shining lights on the DP World Tour over the last decade. The 16th has become legendary thanks to HimmerLand Hill which is behind the green, and provides a great amphitheatre when the Made in HimmerLand is played each year.

The course itself is a brute, measuring at more than 7,300 yards from the back tees and as a Par 72. However, only one of the four par-3s is 200 yards long, which means there’s going to be some very long holes! All four par-5s measure at more than 560 yards, while there are only three par-4s on the lay-out which are less than 400 yards from the tips.

The 11th on the New Course is almost 660 yards from the back tees. It plays as a rarely-seen par-6 for the other tees on the lay-out, but for those playing from the championship tees, it remains as a strong par-5.

Thomas Pieters and Bernd Wiesberger are among the winners of the event when it was formerly known as the Made in Denmark, with home favourite Rasmus Hojgaard being one of those to win the event under its new guise as the Made in HimmerLand. The course also made history in 2015, when the par-3 16th hole was just 79 yards, making it the shortest par-3 to ever be played on the DP World Tour.

Old Course
Jan Sederholm was the man behind the design of the Old Course. It first opened in the 1970s and Sederholm’s design took the 18-hole course through the hilly Scandinavian terrain that the area had to offer. The course has some wonderful scenery, and there is plenty of danger as well despite the course playing less than 5,900 yards.

The Old Course is a Par 70, and plays mainly on the northwestern side of the HimmerLand property. There are lakes, streams and plenty of forestry for the golf ball to work its way around during a game on the Old Course at HimmerLand.

After starting off with a gentle par-5, at just 510 yards from the back tees, the par-4 2nd hole is drivable. There are six par-3s on the Old Course, all of which are less than 200 yards long. The back nine of the course is a unique one, playing as a Par 33 with four of those par-3s and just a single par-5.

HimmerLand Golf Academy

Along with two stunning golf courses, HimmerLand is also the home to a wonderful Golf Academy. The Academy has a lengthy driving range, measuring almost 400 yards from end to end. There are both covered, matted bays and uncovered bays where golfers can play off grass tees.

As well as the driving range, there is also a putting and a chipping green, while golfers also have the opportunity to book some time on the TrackMan simulator, which allows players to hone their skills or even play a round at one of a number of world-renowned courses.

The Golf Academy is also home to HimmerLand’s Academy Course, which is a glorious six-hole par-3 course. The holes range from 85 to 140 yards long, and three of the holes feature water hazards. There are three teeing options on each hole so you can technically play an 18-hole round.

There is an array of coaching and tuition options available from the HimmerLand Golf Academy as well. From individual golf lessons to group clinics, three-day intensive golf schools and beginners’ licence courses, there is coaching for players of all ages and abilities at the HimmerLand Golf Academy.

Sports & Activities

Golf is not the only sporting option at HimmerLand, not by a long shot! The resort is the home to ten Padel courts, with eight of those inside the sports facilities. There are two outdoor Padel courts located next to the outdoor tennis court.

There is also a full-size football pitch made from synthetic turf which can also be split sideways into both 5-a-side and 7-a-side pitches. Bowling, mini-golf and outdoor activities including mountain biking and paddleboarding are also in the HimmerLand range.

HimmerLand is also the home to a state of the art fitness centre, which features a range of Technogym equipment, all with the latest specifications. Hotel guests have free access to the gym throughout their stay.

Glorious Accommodation

HimmerLand is the home to a glorious range of accommodation, from rooms and suites in the HimmerLand Hotel, all the way up to an amazing array of over 150 cottages, all of which back on to the golf courses.

The basic offering at the HimmerLand Hotel is the Standard Double Room, but that still comes with a nice bathroom, flat-screen TV and a private terrace or balcony. There are Superior Double Rooms which add a bit of luxury, while the Family Rooms also come in Standard or Superior offerings as well. The HimmerLand Hotel also has a range of Suites, which are newly built and offer superb views of the 18th hole on both courses.

The cottages sit at the north end of the resort, and can provide accommodation for up to four, five and six people, depending on the option chosen. Each comes with a spacious living room and a well equipped kitchen, with two- and three-bedrooms available.

HimmerLand Spa

If you’re looking to relax after a long day of sport, then the HimmerLand Spa is the perfect place for that. The facilities are second to none and include outdoor pools and hot tubs, a herbal sauna and a steam bath, a cold tub, Snowbliss and an outdoor terrace and balcony to relax on.

Cryotherapy is among the extensive list of treatments that are on offer at the HimmerLand Spa, while the facility is the only one in Scandinavia to offer guests the chance to experience Salve-in-Terra - a clay-based treatment programme. There are also a range of massages and facial treatments on offer from certified professionals at the HimmerLand Spa.
